Apple just launched their Facebook competitor called Ping. Here’s how you can try it

Ping is a music social network that was introduced with release of iTunes 10 on September 1, 2010. As with Twitter, you can follow others and be followed, keep tabs on your favorite artists, and post comments, pictures, videos, suggestions, etc., for others to read. Here’s how to use it.

Steps

  1. Download or upgrade to iTunes 10. Go to the iTunes store and follow the “Download” prompt, or go straight to this page: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

    • Before pressing “Download”, note the checked box “Email me New on iTunes and special iTunes offers.” Uncheck if you don’t want this to happen, otherwise leave it.
    • Click on “Download Now”. Wait for it to download, then follow your computer’s prompts to update your iTunes – you will need to install, add any passwords, and agree to Apple’s terms and conditions. (Note: Turn off iTunes before seeking it to install.)
  2. Return to your iTunes program and open it. It will look quite different from your previous iTunes. It will probably spend some time “creating artwork thumbnails”. Let it run!

  3. Select Ping

    Select Ping

Select Ping from the iTunes sidebar.

    • If this is your first time using Ping, you will need to activate it and you may be prompted to update your browser – if so, follow the prompts on your computer screen. You will also need to identify yourself and key in your password.
    • Click “Turn on Ping”.

  4. Create a profile. Fill out the information about yourself when it asks you to “Create Your Profile”. You can upload or take a picture, tell where you live, write a little about yourself.
    • Select the genres of music you like. You can choose to have these displayed automatically, manually, or not at all. Check the one that you prefer.

    • You can also choose how people can follow you and what should be displayed on your page. Note! If you choose to allow people to follow you, they can see your profile information including your purchasing activity.

  5. Follow your favorite artists. Ping makes it easy to follow artists.
    • The search field

      The search field

Find a favorite artist by searching from the Ping homepage or selecting one that Ping has chosen for you. Key the artist’s name into the search field, or select one recommended by Ping.

    • Click on the “Follow” tab located next to the artist’s name.

    • You will also be able to see what your favorite artists likes.
    • Keep an eye on status updates from your favorite artists. You can follow their feed, including seeing any photos or videos that they upload.
    • Feel free to add comments and join into conversations with your favorite artists. You can read your artist’s reviews and also leave reviews of their work; your reviews are linked back to your Ping identity and others can read them too.
  6. The search field

Follow your friends. You will be able to know what your friends are listening to, and be inspired by their music choices if you follow them.

    • Invite friends by email

      Invite friends by email

Find your friends. Use the “Search People or Artists” search field to find your friends (or potential friends), or you can search by Facebook or by email. Alternately, follow people Ping recommends. Open a name you know and then click on the “Follow” tab and they become a part of your network. Hopefully they’ll follow you back!

    • As with your favorite artist, you’ll be able to see what your friend is listening to and recommending.
    • Check your friend’s follows and followers. Perhaps you’d like to follow some of them too.
  7. Keep up to date with local concerts. iTunes Ping includes a service for keep you updated on when concerts are occurring. You will also be able to tell if your friends are going.
    • This service allows you to connect to purchasing tickets for a concert from Live Nation.
  8. Check Ping charts. These charts let you know what others in your network are listening to. You can check by song or album.

Tips

  • Ping is built into the iTunes app on iPhone and iPod touch.

Things You’ll Need

  • iTunes 10
  • Internet access on computer or iPhone, iPod Touch

Phones are getting smarter

Look around and it’s not hard to notice that there are more smart phones now than before. And the reasons aren’t hard to find. Besides the umpteen models of various manufacturers, what has driven the surge is the innovation in operating systems (OS). And, in what could be a new trend, customers are also looking at the new OS-driven features while picking up a new phone.

An operating system (OS) is a software platform, which determines the type of programs, applications and features that can run on a mobile. There wasn’t much focus on OS until a few years ago, mainly because the technology then didn’t allow many innovations on mobiles.

The R&D in various OS is now focused on open platform. An open platform is a software system that is flexible in terms to usage and integration with functions that were not originally intended by the programer. This innovation in OS, is one reason for the spurt in smart phone usage. A major open platform OS is Android that has been adopted by a number of handset manufacturers like HTC, Samsung and Motorola. One of the latest open platform releases is Bada from Samsung, this year. Nokia is developing MeeGo and phones running on it are expected to be available this year-end.

Canalys, a technology market analysis firm, says world over the smart phone market grew by 64 per cent in the second quarter of 2010. Gartner, another IT research firm, corroborates the trend with figures showing that smart phone sales accounted for 19% of worldwide mobile device sales, an increase of 50.5% from Q2 of 2009.

Among operating systems, Symbian (of Nokia) is still the leader. The Q2 2010 figures from Gartner show Nokia has a worldwide market share of 41.2% with the nearest competitor Research In Motion having 18.2%. The ranking by vendor classification, put out by International Data Corporation (IDC) too shows that Nokia has a market share of 38.1% with RIM a distant second at 17.8%.

ANDROID IMPACT

What is remarkable is the effect Google-backed Android operating system, which is just over two years old, has had on the smart phone segment. In Q2 2009, Android was at the 6th place with a market share of 1.8%, behind Symbian, RIM, iOS, Windows Mobile and Linux. But in a year’s time, Android leapt to the third position with a market share of 17.2%, pushing Apple’s iOS to the 4th place. In the US, Android is now at the top spot after overtaking RIM.

According to Canalys, shipment of smart phones running on Android OS registered a whopping 886% growth year-on-year in Q2 2010. IDC corroborates the trend with figures showing that shipment of HTC and Samsung smart phones which run on Android posted the highest-ever year-on-year growth — 128.6% and 172.7% respectively.

Android is an open platform, and Alok Goel, head of the mobile products, Google, India, says, "Google is now particularly focused on Android, because it enables a lot of functions that aren’t possible on other phones." In India there are at least a dozen manufacturers offering the Android, some of them being HTC, Sony Ericsson, LG and Motorola. The prices too have dropped: from what was around Rs 30,000, when it hit the market some two years back, to around Rs 12,000 now.

Says Goel, "The average daily sales world over of Android-based phones in February this year was 60,000; in June it was 160,00; and in August it’s 200,000. That’s a phenomenal increase. And in the in the last two years, as many as four versions of Android have come out." He says Android phone users access the internet eight-times more than a feature phone user. Also an Android phone user carries an average of around 40 applications, compared to an average of three or four on a feature phone.

ATTRACTIVE APPLICATIONS

If one were to go by retailers, customers are looking at, besides price, the operating systems which was not the case before. "Look at the mobile phone ads; there is now mention of Android, Bada etc. This is unusual, because earlier no one sold a mobile saying it runs on Windows or Symbian. And, now we have some customers asking us to show sets that have Android platform," says Jagadeesh, a retailer in Bangalore.

He says one of the reasons could be the large number of interesting applications that an Android phone offers. Google Goggles is one such, in which a picture taken with the mobile phone can be used to search the web. It’s ideal when one can’t recognise a landmark. All that one needs to do is open the application, click a photo of, say Vidhana Soudha, and just wait for the search result.

Another interesting application that runs on Andoid 1.6 and above is "Gesture Search". This is an easy tool to search on a mobile phone for a particular contact, a bookmark, an application or a music track. The user has to just write out the word on the touchscreen and the search launches and zooms into the closest options.

Google Sky Map that runs on Android helps a user explore the sky. Point the phone at the sky, and the user can see starts, planets, constellations etc. Interestingly, the application works even when the user is inside a closed room.

Clearly, mobile phones are getting smarter and buzzing louder. A new phase mobile telephony evolution seems to be dawning before the better-informed consumer who now has plenty of options by way to models and features to choose from.
