Toyota recalls 1.33m Corolla and Matrix vehicles
Toyota has recalled 1.33 million Corolla sedans and Matrix hatchbacks from model years 2005-2008 in the US and Canada because their engines may stall, Reuters has reported. The auto maker said Corollas and Matrixes equipped with 1ZZ-FE engines may contain a defective engine control module, the computer that regulates engine performance. In some cases, a crack may develop on the module’s circuit board, which could prevent the engine from starting or could cause harsh shifting or an engine stall.

Among measures cited in the Nikkei business daily report: Honda Motor Co. is raising the percentage of overseas parts used in its cars assembled in Japan; rival Toyota Motor Corp. is now importing engines from the U.S. for its own cars; camera maker Canon Inc. is considering a total overhaul of its production structures; Sony Corp. is raising prices for its Vaio computers in the U.S. and Europe; and Seiko Epson Corp. may follow suit for its ink-jet printers.

The Japanese car maker does not make vehicles in Iran and has no direct operations in the country, Steve Curtis, a US-based spokesman for Toyota, said. About 4,000 Toyota vehicles were shipped to Iran in 2008, 250 in 2009 and 230 this year through May, the report said, citing information from Toyota.
