WikiWorldBook: telephone directory for emails (Guardian)

Ever wanted to contact someone but can’t find their email address? Social networks, blogs and Twitter all provide ways of contacting people, but there’s nothing quite as easy as a phone book equivalent. Except there is – and WikiWorldBook is just one of the companies trying to solve this problem.Founded by and run by just one man – Oxford-based Ben Leefield – the site started up in June 2008, backed by a handful of angel investors. WikiWorldBook has 20,000 registered users so far but wants 100,000 by this time next year.? What’s your pitch? We have reinvented the telephone book for email. To find someone and instantly contact them by email, type their name into Google and if they are registered on our service, their WikiWorldBook address book page should appear high up in Google’s results. Click their page and you can instantly send that person an email, without having to register. The user’s email address is hidden in order to protect their privacy.Users can also choose to build a comprehensive address book page with as much of their contact information as they wish to display. Their contact details such as email, VOIP, IM and weblinks are all hyperlinked to the appropriate service for one-click operation. We search engine optimise each user’s ‘address book page’ so that it has the best possible chance of ranking well for their name. We have also established a good amount of trust with Google, so we tend to rank well for people’s names ? occasionally ahead of Facebook and LinkedIn ? although inevitably the SERP’s can bounce around quite a lot and it can be challenging with famous or common names.? How do you make money?Currently through advertising on the website. Our traffic has been growing strongly and recently we have been getting around 7,000 visitors a day. When we reach 100,000 registered users, we’ll introduce some value-added services to boost profitability.? How are you surviving the downturn? We’re in pretty good shape, although cash is tight. Advertising revenue per click is down but traffic has continued to grow. Luckily our running costs are very low, being a directory type service.? What’s your background?Chartered Surveyor. I was building office buildings. It’s a long story ?? What makes your business unique? No one else is really in our ‘instant email’ space at the moment, but why wouldn’t you have an email directory in the same way as you have a telephone directory? And, of course, why wouldn’t you access it via Google?? What has been your biggest achievement so far?An amazing review from Kate Russell on BBC Click, which was our first big media break. Then being tweeted by Stephen Fry came a close second. So a deafeningly loud thank you to both Kate and Stephen.? Who in the tech business inspires you?Google for their values (which even they find it hard to live up to) and Markus Frind of Plenty of Fish for his technical ability. His visual design skills may suck but his technical brilliance of running such a vast and fast web service with so few physical resources is inspirational.? What’s your biggest challenge?Media coverage. Reaching the 10 million people out there who I know will sign up tomorrow if they hear of our free service. That figure is based on our conversion rate.? What’s the most important web tool you use each day?I think I have RSI from pressing the Search button on Google.? Name your closest competitorsOur closest competitor are Telnic’s dot tel domains, which are a similar address book service with an annual charge. Other competitors include OnePage, which is beautifully designed, although they don’t use search engines as a starting point, which I think is a strategic mistake. Most people use Google, Bing or Yahoo to find people ? a third of all search queries are people related.? Where do you want the company to be in five years?Ten million users would be perfect. With good media coverage and a free service, I can’t see why it wouldn’t be achievable.? Sell to Google, or be bigger than Google?Sell to Google. Business is about both striving to achieve and being pragmatic.wikiworldbook.comInternet startupsInternetDigital mediaJemima Kissguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

How to Calculate Chess Tactics

Chess demands concentration

Chess demands concentration

Are you able to think three moves ahead in chess? It’s harder than it sounds, but you can learn to do it. Once you learn this visualization exercise, you will realize you can calculate much further than you ever thought you could, and you won’t settle for less the next time you play chess!

Steps

  1. Here both the white pawns have moved to the fourth rank. This could be a real position if the knight moved out and then moved back.

Here both the white pawns have moved to the fourth rank. This could be a real position if the knight moved out and then moved back.

Set out a chessboard. Be sure to use a set that has algebraic notation on it: Algebraic notation is a way for you to read the moves and then play them on the board for each side so you can follow a game and study what each side has played, and analyze the moves.

    • Across the bottom will be the letters from “a” to “h.” the letters will not be capitalized. There will be numbers going up the sides from “1″ to “8.”
    • Each square has an address. The first square on the board is “a1.”
    • To represent a move, start with the first letter of the piece, capitalized, then write the square you moved it to. If two different pieces that start with the same letter can move to the same square, then include the square the piece originated from.
    • Each piece starts with the first letter of its name, except for the knight, which starts with a capital “N.” If it is a pawn, then just write the name of the square it moves to with no capital letter. Castling is written 0-0 for kingside castling and 0-0-0 for queenside.
    • There is more to explain about how to read a chess game, but for now, just follow the directions to get to a certain position where the visual exercise will begin.
  2. Play the following moves, moving for each side. 1.e4 is a white move. 1.e5 is a black move. In a scoresheet it looks like this: 1. e4 e5.
    • Next play 2.Bc4 Qf6.
    • Next 3.Nf3 Qg6. 4. Nc3 Qxg2. When there is a small letter x, it means capture. So the Queen has captured the pawn on g2.
  3. Begin the exercise. Though you will be calculating white’s move, you will be visualizing for both sides.
  4. Analyze what has happened first. The queen has taken a pawn. It’s not good to lose pieces or pawns willy-nilly, but it’s also not generally a good idea to move the same piece twice in the opening, nor to move the queen out first, as she is such a powerful piece that she becomes a target and can get trapped. Greed can also get you into trouble, especially if you go attacking before your pieces are developed. Also there is a saying, “Loose pieces fall off, meaning that pieces that are not protected can become targets of fancy tactics. So knowing these things, let’s see if you can find a way to punish black.
  5. Calculate. Find five candidate moves. Go down the branch of just one of them. This is what it means to calculate three moves ahead. You don’t just pick one move and follow it. You pick as many as you can, and then analyze each one, finding the best possible moves for your opponent as you can, and seeing if you have a good response to it. There is a rule among strong chess players that says “Look at all checks and captures.” There is a move here that satisfies both. Look for a moment at the board and see if you can figure out what it is, and then go on to the next step. But first look for it.
  6. Start to visualize. Did you you find Bxf7? That’s the one. So now comes the visualization part. Don’t touch the pieces – do this in your mind.
    • Visualize what the board is going to look like after you play Bxf7. See the piece there.
    • While visualizing the piece there, ask “what are all of black’s options for getting out of check?”. How many are there? That’s right, there are three: The king can capture the bishop on f7, or he can move to where the queen used to be, on d8, or he can move forward one square to e7.
    • Visualize the king capturing the piece on f7. See in your mind the new position after these two moves have been made. Hold the image in your mind as clearly as you can.
    • Next ask what white can do from here. What moves can white make in this new position where black’s king is on the f7 square? Name several possible moves, and look for one that checks because you always want to look at all checks and captures first. See anything good? You could check by Ng5 but there is a problem with that. The queen is guarding that square and will capture. So how can you move the queen away. How about put the rook on the g-file? Visualize the Rook moving to g1. Now where can the queen go? Only one square. Visualize the queen moving to h3. Now you can check with the knight. Notice anything else about Ng5? That’s right, it’s a fork. You win the queen. So you sacrificed the bishop to win the queen. Not bad.
    • Do you see any better moves for the black queen? No. Probably just to take the rook on g1 to get as much as he can out of it. Can you reverse the order of these moves so he can’t do that? How about instead of Bxf7 first you do that second, after chasing the queen to h3. Now you can get the queen with a minimum of losses. Of course, you also may have tipped off your opponent to your plans by chasing his queen to the forking square.
  7. Keep practicing. After trying this exercise, you will have visualized three moves ahead for one move. In a real game, aim to analyze more than one move. Go through this process for each of the moves that you are considering. The further you are able to go, and the more vividly and accurately you are able to visualize the positions two or three, or even four moves ahead, the better chess player you will become.

Video

Tips

  • Look at all checks and captures.
  • Try to see tricky plans for your opponent, so you can prevent them in time.
  • Loose pieces fall off, so when a piece is unguarded, be aware of possible tactics that might occur.
  • Don’t go for “cheapos.” A cheapo is a trick that only works if your opponent makes the worst move. Always assume your opponent sees your trap, and if your plan fails, and it makes your position worse, you can lose the game. Only go for cheap tricks if they improve, not worsen your position.

Things You’ll Need

  • A chessboard with algebraic notation

Reel Nattha luckier than real ones?

Will he commit suicide, will he not …? Suspense continues till the end. But Nattha (played by Omkar Das Manikpuri) — the lead hero of Peepli (Live) — has been shown alive at the end of the film, thanks to the apparent commercial constraints. Director of the movie, Anusha Rizvi, has admitted that the hero, with a wife and three kids, was shown alive in view of the “happy-ending” taste of the Indian audience.

A profit-driven director changed the script to safeguard her interests, but even compulsions of the votebank politics could not bail out the distressed farmers of Bundelkhand, who seem to have inspired the central theme of Peepli (live).

A few examples from Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh exemplify as how the drought-hit farmers of the region are still deprived of the optimum benefits of the special packages offered to them. Moreover, Bundelkhand farmers were seen as major beneficiaries of the farm loan waiver announced by the union government in 2008.

In 2009, union government had approved a Rs 7,266 crore Bundelkhand package. However, it was far below the Rs 80,000 crore demanded by the Mayawati government for Bundelkhand.

Claiming to have spent over Rs 2,500 crore on afforestation drive alone within a year’s time, the state government had termed the union government package too less.

Anyway, funds are flowing in for now. But locals still complain about officials’ highhandedness and denial of the benefits promised to them. Indrapal Tiwari, a farmer belonging to Khurhan village in Banda with a land-holding of over 4 acres of land, cites his own example to prove anomalies in execution of the loan waiver scheme.

Tiwari had borrowed Rs 2.87 lakh and bought a tractor in 2004. He failed to pay the instalments and his tractor was seized and auctioned for Rs 1.88 lakh in 2006. Which means, the bank recovered almost two-third of the money it had lent.

But recently the bank issued a RC of Rs 1.99 lakh against him and a loan waiver of Rs 526 (five-hundred-twenty-six) was given to him. Tiwari has four acres of land and he was eligible for complete waiver as government had announced waiver of the entire loan amount to the farmers with a land-holding of five acres or less. Tiwari has a long list of people meeting his fate in the region.

President of Gram Swarajya Prahari, an NGO based in Banda district, Pushpendra, says that district administration had spent Rs 10-crore in afforestation drive near his Panduai village. “But we can’t see a single sapling intact,” he adds. He says that the plantation drives wre taken up but none took care of saplings’ survival.

He also alleged that the drought relief cheques worth Rs 100 and Rs 50 were still being distributed even though state government had pledged that no cheque below Rs 3000 will be issued as drought relief. Pushpendra says that the suicides and hunger deaths had come down as there were jobs but there wasn’t any long-term sustenance in sight. “Villagers are getting jobs by working as labourers in ongoing government projects like MNREGA and they are managing meals for now. But no sustained effort is being done to make the lands fertile and consolidate the local area economy,” he adds.

Successive governments including the ones led by Mulayam Singh Yadav and now Mayawati in the past eight years paid no heed to reports of farmers’ suicides and hunger deaths until Rahul Gandhi paid a few visits to the region, which was followed by the union government package. The Nehru-Gandhi scion needs to revisit the area and prevent further repetition of the apprehensions raised by his late father
Rajiv Gandhi (only 10 paisa of a rupee reaches common man).

Smallest Man vs. Biggest Biceps in London

Khagendra arrived in London this morning to meet Tiny Iron, the man with the largest biceps in all of the UK!  Check out this match up:

Tiny Iron kept a close eye on K, but at the end, they were cool.

They even posed for pics outside of our Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum in London.

Khagendra stopped in London to celebrate the launch of our book “Ripley’s Believe It or Not! ENTER IF YOU DARE!”

You can find our book for sale HERE.

We had such a great time with Khagendra.  He is truly an amazing being, and we were sad to see him go home.  We wish him all of the best and we hope to see our tiny friend again someday!
