The curious appeal of Salman Khan
After years, the promos of a film have really excited me and I’m dying to watch it, first day, first show. No, I have no idea if the film is good or bad. In all probability, it will be awful. Two recent films in this genre were ghastly, though they made lots of money in the box office. And one of them, being a Aamir Khan film, assumed iconic proportions and got the star the moniker of being a matchless marketing whiz, particularly because he stole the thunder from under Shah Rukh’s nose. While Shah Rukh was doing his usual number for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Aamir came in from behind with his buzz cut ushers in the theatres announcing the arrival of a thunderous blockbuster two weeks later. The whole focus shifted overnight from Surinder Sahni to Sanjay Singhania. Both films were as ordinary as they come. But Aamir’s went on to become a huge hit, announcing the arrival of a new genre in Bollywood: the Tamil bloodfest.
Its success quickened the release of another bloodfest, this time with Telugu origins: Wanted. You can’t get cheesier than Wanted. It’s possibly the worst movie you have seen, shoddily scripted, badly crafted, crudely put together: an astonishing display of plywood machismo. But even that couldn’t stop it from becoming a huge blockbuster simply because Salman Superbrat swaggered through the film with his trademark cheekiness, doing nothing, just being himself. That made the movie. If, like me, you watch movies not at their premiere, or on TV, but in a typical old fashioned theatre, not even in a multiplex, you will figure why Salman works. His every strut is greeted with wolf whistles and cat calls. His every line of cheeky dialogue is loudly chanted by his fans and some of them, who are watching the film for the umpteenth time, anticipate his lines by screaming them out a split second before they are spoken on screen. This is clearly one star whose fans don’t want him to act. They want him to strut through the film, doing nothing more than delivering cheesy lines of dialogue and beating up guys beefier than him. And, O yes, they reserve the maximum applause for that one moment in a film when he takes his shirt off, either for the mother of a fight or a chalu song. In both, Salman has exactly the same slightly funny, slightly exasperated expression as if to say: Why the hell am I doing this shit?
Aamir’s the opposite. He’s intense to a fault. Every role appears to be a matter of life and death for him. He has to get it just right. His films too are exactly the opposite of Salman’s. They are so carefully crafted that every emotion, every feeling is wrung out of every scene. Often even the manipulation shows. Most times he gets away with it simply because he’s Aamir and can do no wrong. His producers too have taken on Shah Rukh at the numbers game. Huge full page ads declare box office figures that keep spiralling till the pundits finally throw up their hands in exasperation. Akshay Kumar’s producers too briefly joined this numbers game but are now slightly subdued with Akshay having signed on a few duds. But Akshay remains chilled. He knows he has an innate goofy charm that can survive all the tacky screenplays he cheerfully sleepwalks through.
Funnily, barring Salman, the others are looking less and less like stars today. They are beginning to look like businessmen. Shah Rukh has even hit the cover of a business magazine and is sounding, behaving more like a producer than a star. So is Aamir. What they don’t realise is that popular fan bases are not built on the imagery of businessmen or producers. The common man does not admire a bania. The villain in most films of my growing up years was the village mahajan or the city slicker in a white shark skin suit sitting with his bottle of Vat 69. India may have changed. Money is no longer a bad word but the man on the street still admires a hero, not a wealthy man. The iconic hero of Bollywood was for over two decades the Angry Young Man who fought the entire might of the system and brought it tumbling down.
This brings me back to Chulbul Pandey. I am sure Dabangg will be whatever. But what the heck, I love movies where a cracked hero walks through an equally cracked screenplay doing the weirdest, whackiest things, and no one does that better than Salman. Will I ever make a film like that? Unlikely. Will I recommend a film like that? Not over my dead body. Will I go to a sweaty, stinking theatre to watch it, surrounded by screaming, whistling, hysteric Salman fans? Yes, I will. That’s the movie watching experience I pay for. It reminds me of my adolescence. It reminds of the time when movies were movies and heroes could do anything and get away with it.

Crown prince Rahul cannily turns left
Has Rahul Gandhi launched a campaign against Congress? More precisely, has the heir presumptive, affectionately dubbed a modern Lord Krishna by his more fervent fans, begun to undermine the Congress establishment, at the pinnacle of which sits Manmohan Singh and his home minister P Chidambaram?
This makes some political sense. Having milked the right-of-centre to the point of exhaustion, the Rahul Congress is steering towards left-of-centre. Meanings, of course, have changed. As the centre has shifted in the last two decades, ‘right’ and ‘left’ have moved along with it. ‘Left’ now represents populism, rather than ideology. Marx died in the 1990s and even his ghost cannot escape from the effective burial given by comrades Mikhail Gorbachev and Deng Xiaoping.
The sabotage of big-ticket investment in order to fence the tribal vote in Orissa is only part of the developing story. The official catechism describes Naxalites as the biggest threat to India. If Chidambaram had his way, the air force would be bombing them. He must be a bit deflated at the sight of Lado Sikoka, a Naxal, preceding Rahul Gandhi at an Orissa public meeting around the same time that Manmohan Singh was urging, from a dais in Delhi, police chiefs to fight the good fight against Maoists. Sikoka had been arrested by this police on August 9 and beaten up, before being released so that he could welcome Rahul Gandhi with a garland at Niyamgiri.
It has always been clear to Delhi insiders that Digvijay Singh opened a front against Chidambaram with Rahul Gandhi’s permission. Outsiders now have confirmation. Since politics has very marginal room for sentiment, Chidambaram could become the first casualty in a Rahul Gandhi cabinet. It would be a sad end to a fizzing career were Chidambaram to end up as governor of Chhattisgarh, the better to counsel his supporters in the BJP on how to tackle Naxalites without help from the air force. Indeed, it cannot have been very helpful to our ambitious home minister that the most laudatory references now come from BJP leaders. Perhaps he raised the issue of "saffron terror" to pick up some long overdue brownie points from his own side.
No prizes for guessing who would become home minister in a Rahul Gandhi government.
The ultimate success for a ruling party is that delicious bipolar ability to occupy both government and opposition space. The British in India perfected the art of functioning through a loyal opposition. The Muslim League was so loyal that not a single League leader went to jail during the three decades of our independence movement. The Congress tended to be less loyal, but always recognized limits, until Mahatma Gandhi liberated the Congress and enough Indians from either fear or temptation. One cannot think of a Congress leader who did not go to jail.
Democracy, but naturally, induced a variant. Jawaharlal Nehru ignored the feeble right and absorbed the non-communist left into the Congress in periodic stages. His own leftist credentials were impeccable, which helped.
Indira Gandhi artfully split the left and right, until the Emergency united the rest against Congress. Their common antipathy lasted, more or less, until the NDA gave Congress and the left common cause. The new element is the sudden implosion of the Left in Bengal, which threatens to convert vacant space into a vacuum. Even as Congress and Mamata Banerjee seek to destroy the CPM, they know the value of Marxist sentiment in the country’s polity.
It is axiomatic that a largely impoverished nation needs a political party that the poor can identify with. The Congress has set out to be the party of the poor in daytime, and of the rich at night. Its sunlight politics will fetch votes, its twilight policies will enable it to govern. This is an extremely clever act whose opening scenes are being played out for a new generation that is vague about Indira Gandhi and amnesiac about Nehru. The hero of this drama must have the charisma to dazzle the poor and the flexibility to keep the rich onside. That is the challenge before Rahul Gandhi. His avowed role is to be the guardian of the poor in Delhi, which means that the poor need protection from Delhi. He is at home with the elite in the evening and is now making the effort to capture the sunshine hours.
However, regional parties have been there, done that. They continue to do so. Naveen Patnaik understands the trap of governance. He has been forced to take a position on one side or the other of the day-night constituencies; and he does not have a Manmohan Singh to play the foil. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee could not manage this contradiction, but others have learnt. Patnaik, Nitish Kumar, Mayawati or Chandrababu Naidu will not be pushovers.
Paradox and problem intersect in any country; India’s size and potential make the challenge more complex. We will see whether Congress has the agility to use power to transfer power to yet another generation.

Our pot-holed system breeds treadmillionaires
After long and in-depth research, full of arduous travel to tedious destinations such as Singapore, Bali, Los Angeles, New York, London and Berlin — with a difficult weekend side-trip to Helsinki — an all-party parliamentary delegation has come to the incontrovertible conclusion that it only rains in India.
The logic is irrefutable. If rain fell on other cities, their roads would also crumple like Commonwealth Games toilet paper. Since no London becomes a moon track with one rainfall, it obviously never rains in London.
Fie on those who think that only Delhi surrenders to water-riven weather. The ‘low way’ (it began as a highway) between Mussoorie and Delhi is a very democratic drive. It begins in BJP khand, swerves through BSP queendom and then zigzags into Congress empire. This national artery gets a nervous breakdown in Uttarakhand, then descends into nightmarish trauma in UP. By the time it enters Delhi, it has an incurable split personality. It should be renamed after Freud.
We are a curious nation. For nine months we pray for the monsoon, and the moment our prayers are answered, we have no idea what to do. It is as if the showers came once a century rather than once a year.
You don’t need to summon Agatha Christie to solve the plot. Most of our roads are constructed for annual destruction, since there is more money to be made in rebuilding than in building. Governments are not merely hand-in-glove with contractors; they are hand-in-pocket. Shared loot is safe loot.
Contractors are not particularly worried about the law; they have lawyers with Satyam on their tongues. A congenial cynic suggested that it was time Parliament passed legislation decreeing that anyone worth more than Rs 1,000 crore would automatically be given bail. Businessmen make money all over the world. The difference is the distance between profit and avarice. The first has limits; greed has none.
In our country, corruption has become mainstream; honesty is a rivulet, which is why the System has developed such sophisticated expertise at deflecting street anger. The game is played out in full public view, and we do not see hypocrisy trapping us in slow motion.
What does the System do when it does not have an answer? It changes the question.
Witness how the rage against corruption in CWG has been manoeuvred into a debate on whether they can be held successfully. Who was responsible for this delay in the first place? Even this question has been diverted. The Organizing Committee, reorganized with some sticking plaster, is being reinvented from villain to victim of mysterious forces. We do not know if any race in CWG will see a nail-biting finish, but certainly the preparation has acquired a nail-biting dénouement.
Fudge is offered instead of explanation. The previous government, it is declared in stentorian tones, took the decision to hold the Games in Delhi. So? The previous government did not decide to hire treadmills for a few weeks at many times their retail price. Instead of treadmills, we have treadmillionaires.
A committee of 10 wise bureaucrats is appointed as the scourge to destroy evil and shepherd the Games towards a shining heaven. What has the committee been tasked to do? To “solve coordination problems…ensure completion…furnish progress reports…tie up loose ends”. In other words, to do within 45 days what should have been done over 45 months.
The simple fact is that they cannot take any decisions because all the decisions have already been taken during The Era of Evil — apart perhaps from a catering contract and sponsorship, the second of which is a revenue decision rather than a spending one. A government committee, incidentally, will provide excellent cover for the return of public sector sponsors.
The critical issue lies elsewhere. Indians are not against the Games; they are against corruption in the Games. Can this committee reverse any of the deals that have been exposed remorselessly by media? Will it return, without payment, the treadmills to those who have become treadmillionaires? Sanctimonious noises about the guilty being punished after the event are meaningless. How? If a contract has been sealed at a particular price by mutual consent, and then executed, how can the contractor be held guilty of malpractice? This is more dust in the eyes of a nation already semi-blind with sleaze.
Suresh Kalmadi was quite right to flash a V-sign after the “accountability” meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence on Thursday afternoon. The scapegoats in his committee have paid the necessary price. None of their decisions have been altered, since there were too many others clinging to the food chain. Nothing has changed, apart from the touch of a few cosmetics that barely hide the accumulated debris of deals. Long live the System.
Unless, of course, it rains on the parade in October.

How to Use a Masonry Scaffold
Masonry scaffolds make brick or block laying safer and more efficient when working higher than a mason can easily reach from the ground. Erecting and using scaffolds takes planning and careful implementation to make the work safe and productive. Here are some steps to help you to understand how it is done.
Steps
-
Plan the scaffold project so that sufficient materials will be available for the job. Scaffold can be rented, or purchased if you will be able to use it for numerous projects. The basic parts of a scaffold system include these items:
- Scaffold jacks
- Stacking pins
- Leveling legs or base plates
- Braces
- Access ladders
- Scaffold boards
- Outriggers
- Various clamps and pins for assembly.
- Rent or purchase the items you will need for your project. There are a number of specialty rental companies that engineer and even assemble and disassemble scaffolding for projects. Having skilled workers erect the scaffolding is critical for safety and productivity, not to mention avoiding a possible fine by safety authorities like the OSHA (USA) or similar safety regulators.
- Prepare the area where the scaffolding will be erected. The ground or surface it will be erected on should be as level as possible, and soils should be compacted and have sufficient drainage to support the scaffold, even in wet weather.
-
Lay out the jacks according to the manufacturer’s spacing, using adjustable support legs to make sure the first lift of jacks are level and plumb. Installing the first level of scaffolding correctly will make completing the scaffold easier, and ensure the finished scaffold system will provide a safe, stable work platform when it is finished.
- Install all braces and connectors prior to proceeding to the next tier of jacks. Ladders should be furnished for access to each scaffold level, and workers should be provided with personal safety equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, and fall protection during the erection process.
-
Use scaffold boards to deck each level of scaffold before installing the next level. You may find you are able to install scaffold jacks with a minimal number of boards at each level, but since in normal masonry work there will be work to be performed from each level, having a complete deck will make stocking materials and accessing the work area safer and easier. Some things to consider when installing scaffold boards are:
- Use appropriate boards. Usually, scaffold boards are 2X10 (5x25cm) planks either grade-stamped number 1, laminated veneer lumber, or pinned scaffold boards.
- Lap scaffold planks 6 inches (15.24 cm) on each side crossing the top rail of the jacks. Standard jacks are spaced 7 feet (2.1 meters) on center, so 8 foot (2.4 meters) or 16 foot (5.33 meters) boards are standard.
- Cleat or nail boards together if necessary, to ensure they do not shift or slip during use.
- Discard any split, rotted, or damaged scaffold boards.
- Fit scaffold boards as tightly together as possible so that the materials will not fall through cracks to lower scaffold levels during use.
-
Install safety features as soon as possible at each level of scaffold construction. Handrails, toe-boards, and access gates should be installed before workers are allowed to work without fall protection, and materials are stocked on the scaffold deck.
-
Tie off tall scaffold structures to the adjacent structure to prevent the scaffold from falling. Depending on your location and work situation, government regulations may require scaffolds to be braced or supported before use. In the United States, the OSHA requires such bracing when a scaffold’s height to width ratio 5 to 1 or greater. For example, a scaffold that is 5 feet (1.5 meters) wide has to be secured if it is 25 feet (7.62 meters) tall, or higher.
-
Have the person responsible for overseeing the erection and use of the scaffold (under OSHA guidelines, this is the competent person) inspect the scaffold prior to use. Tags should be affixed at access locations and should include a daily inspection log that is signed and dated each day. Here are a few of the items which should be checked daily:
- Check the scaffold support sills for erosion, undermining, and other deterioration.
- Look for braces and support members which are damaged or have been removed during the previous shift.
- Check the condition of the scaffold planks, handrails, and toe boards.
- Make sure the work areas are clean and clear of debris.
- Look for any other obvious signs of damage or broken clamps, braces, or pins.
-
Install outriggers and other accessories necessary for the work to be performed when needed. This will allow the workers to adjust the working height between each level, and enable them to work more efficiently.
- Stock the materials to be used from the scaffold on the scaffold deck. Large projects, and projects where large amounts of materials will be loaded at intervals, should have an access tower attached to the main scaffold system so that the weight of these materials will not be a hazard, and access for workers can be maintained on the scaffold deck. Avoid overloading scaffold decks. As a rule of thumb, any time the scaffold boards sag more than an inch (2.5 cm) or so, it is likely that they are overloaded.
- Perform the job the scaffold has been built for, whether laying brick or block, installing insulation, waterproofing, or stucco, painting and/or caulking.
- Dismantle the scaffolding when the job is finished. This is generally done in the reverse order of the assembly, and care should be taken to manage all materials so that they can be lowered safely to the ground. Cleaning loose debris and using buckets or bags to contain the small parts will help prevent items from being dropped where they may be damaged or lost, or workers could be injured.
- Clean up the area where the scaffolding was used and store the scaffold until it is needed again. Rented scaffold should be counted and returned to the company it was rented from, and any damaged or missing items should be reported.
Tips
-
*Carefully plan the scaffolding system so the correct amount of jacks, braces, and other components are obtained.
- Use approved scaffold planks. These may be laminated veneer lumber, number 1 grade 2 X 10 (5cm x 25cm) or 2 X 12 (5cm x 30.48 cm) planks (boards with minimal knots, splits, and wained edges), or aluminum walkboards manufactured for this purpose.
- Keep the work area clear of debris, being especially careful of items which may fall from the scaffold.
- Barricade, flag off, or use other methods to prevent people from traveling or working underneath, or in the immediate area of the scaffold.
Warnings
-
Follow the individual scaffold manufacturer’s instructions when erecting a scaffold.
- The erection and disassembly of scaffold systems is dangerous, and should be done by experienced persons with qualified supervisory skills.
- Be especially careful when erecting and using scaffolds near areas where public traffic may be expected.
Things You’ll Need
- Scaffold jacks, braces, planks, and misc. pins and connectors.
- Ladders, safety gates, handrails, and toe boards.
- Shovels, hammers, tape measure, and carpenter’s level.
- Anchoring wires or straps.
- Safety equipment such as fall protection, hard hats, gloves, and eye protection.

Vaccinations at the speed of light, courtesy lasers
It may soon be possible to deliver drugs and vaccines into the body at the speed of light – thanks to scientists from Georgia Tech, who can now blast a hole in a cell, place a molecule inside and seal it back up a split second later using a laser pulse.

To Pillory Omar Is To Give Into Blackmail
Kashmir is in the grip of a serious crisis. Bloody conflagrations between security forces and a Palestinian variant of ‘stone-pelting’ protestors have plunged the Valley into turmoil. In the face of this new ‘intifada’ the state government is finding it very difficult to cope. While there is more than ample evidence to suggest that the roots of this ‘spontaneous agitation’ lie in the Pak-ISI nurtured terror camps across the LoC, perplexingly the blame for this ‘engineered’ show of public dissatisfaction has been squarely laid at the doorstep of the Omar Abdullah government.
Over the last few weeks experts of every stripe have come out and accused Omar Abdullah of mismanagement and the consequent mob fury. Lengthy prescriptions have been read out to him in the mainstream media: That he must show solidarity with those affected by the violence to win hearts and restore credibility, that he must carry the Opposition along to build consensus, that he must bridge the trust deficit by releasing Separatists and then build on that move by quickly announcing a ‘game changing’ political package. By this logic, it appears upholding democratic ideals and norms is a burden only for Omar to carry.
In other words its perfectly legitimate for the PDP, the main Opposition party in the state, to obstreperously refuse not one but several offers of dialogue from the State and Centre alike. It is perfectly alright for it, in the name of furthering Kashmiri aspirations, to not lift a finger to dissuade the protesters from resorting to mindless violence.
Furthermore, if the experts are to be believed it’s perfectly legitimate for Omar Abdullah to dent the morale of our security forces by commiserating with the families of a murderous mix of alleged terrorists and stone-pelting hooligans. Those who believe these agitations are driven purely by public sentiment are ignoring the facts: The spools of video tape that show Kashmiri separatists sharing the stage in Islamabad with the bosses of the Lashkar-E-Toiba and the Hizbul Mujahideen; the ravings of Masarat Alam Bhat, an underground radicalised political activist whose fiery exhortations to Kashmiri youth to pick up the gun are splashed across You Tube; the confessions of David Coleman Headley linking the ISI to unrest in the Valley.
And then there is the Congress, what of its role? Why isn’t anyone reminding it of its obligations as an equal partner in government to refrain from politicking? All through the crisis its leaders at the state level have done little else but to beseech the Centre to step in and if not impose President’s rule then at least place the Assembly under suspended animation. It is as if throwing the Constitution out of the window is the solution?
It is curious that Kashmir watchers are today urging Omar to open a line to ‘all shade of public opinion’ in the Valley. Not so long ago the hold of the separatists on the public was palpably waning. Bandh calls went unheeded and several separatists in fact joined the mainstream. The split within Separatist ranks threw up a profound ideological confusion, so much so that in the desperate search for a constituency the moderate faction of the umbrella separatist group the Hurriyat reverted to its ‘core’ agenda even boycotting a Prime Minister led initiative for talks. It’s therefore, all the more inexplicable that today, when once again they’ve begun to dictate via their words and actions an implacable line, the liberal lobby wants them back at the talks table. The question is: Are we going to reward blackmail? Are we going to legitimise the desecration of Constitutionalism?
Should it not be the equal moral obligation of the moderate Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, the self-styled advocate of peace to call upon the protesters to obey curfew orders? Is he silent because he fears that if his call goes unheeded it may become clear that his writ doesn’t extend beyond the walls of the Jama mosque? Or is it because in the protests the Separatists see a political lifeline?
The Centre has done well to back Omar Abdullah. And the Chief Minister has done well to send a firm message out to the agents of terror: End the violence for change to take effect. It is one thing to criticise Omar Abdullah for administrative lapses and quite another to lose all perspective and underwrite the violence and the prevarication of co-stakeholders as a legitimate reaction to the inefficiency. To do so would be to endorse a sell out to the politics of terror and blackmail.

What Is A Carp?
A carp is a freshwater fish that is found all over the world. In some places carp have been introduced both for sport and human consumption and in others these fish are considered a pest. Carp that have been domesticated and selectively bred are popular in Japan where they originated as an ornamental fish.
Wild carp are brown or dark green in colour and are unremarkable in appearance. They have two barbells or small whiskers that hang in front of their faces. They have a low-slung mouth and eye and are somewhat plump and look like an oversized goldfish. Carp have long dorsal fins, several small and evenly spaced fins along their lower bodies, and split tales. These fish are known to grow to a remarkable size and weight. In Europe, where carp are fished for sport, they have been documented at over 36 kgs (80 lbs).
Most areas in the United States consider carp to be an invasive pest. Carp are omnivorous fish and they will consume anything and everything in their path, which often leads to waterways being muddied and aquatic plants being shredded. The consequence of this feeding pattern is that native fish species find the area no longer inhabitable and will either die off or migrate. Either result is damaging to the ecosystem. Many states actively attempt to eliminate carp in order to save native species.
Carp were originally introduced in the United States as food fish despite not being eaten in North America. The fish is popular as food in other parts of the world despite being quite bony and needing careful filleting or preservation. Depending on the environment in which the carp has been raised, it can have somewhat sweet flesh. The firm white meat of the carp is extremely sensitive to environmental factors and can change significantly based on what type of food the carp has eaten and whether or not it has been exposed to any contaminants. The majority of carp reared in the United States has accumulated levels of pollution that are unsuitable for human consumption.
In Europe, carp are considered primarily a sport fish but are also eaten. Anglers these challenging fish in lakes all over Europe, in the eastern nations in particular. In Japan, brightly coloured carp are highly sought after and are known as ‘koi’. Koi are often found in ornamental water features and lakes and some are surprisingly tame. They will often accept food offered by hand or come to the water’s surface to ‘socialize’ with their human admirers. Some koi will sell for extremely large sums.

How to Make and Use a Keyhole Gaff
Sometimes when you are fishing from a high place and a net or gaff cannot reach the fish, use this device. It is used to land big fish by snagging the swivel. Easy to make and carry, the device also protects your rod from breaking, especially as a novice. It’s commonplace for beginner fishermen to abuse their rods when landing a big fish by swinging the rod vertically and pointing 180 degrees away from the fish, which is very bad. Here is how to make and use the keyhold gaff device.
Steps
-
Assemble the needed items to make this gaff. These are listed below in the “Things You’ll Need”.
- If you are 30 feet from the water (rather than 15 feet), your cord must be longer and the plywood must be heavier in relation to the cord, to easily slide this device down the main fishing line and over the swivel.
-
With the jigsaw, cut the keyhole and the slot on the side. The slot on the side is where you will place the gaff over your main fishing line. The thin slot, in the keyhole, is where you will snag the swivel, so this slot must be thinner than the swivel.
- With the drill, make a hole that is big enough to pass the cord through.
-
Use this device for landing fish that weigh more than the breaking strength of your fishing line. For example, if the fish weighs 10 pounds and your main fishing line is 8 pounds test, your main line is going to break.
- For bigger lines, even if your main line’s breaking strength is bigger than the fish’s weight, it is easier to use a cord to pull the fish up. For example, if your mainline is 18 pounds test and the fish is 10 pounds, your hands are going to hurt grasping such a small diameter line.
-
To use this device, reel the fish until it is below you and slip the device over the main line. Let the device slide down until it is past the swivel. Snag the swivel, by lifting the device somewhat sharply so that the leader slides into the keyhole slot. The hook and leader must be strong.
-
After snagging the swivel, set your rod down and pull the fish up with the cord. The short leader line, which is between the swivel and the hook, should be stronger than the main line.
-
Do not use a snap swivel because it might come apart from the stress. For ease of attaching or removing of the leader to the swivel, use a big loop and cow hitch it. Another option would be to keep using a snap swivel but to have a split ring between the snap and the leader.
Tips
- The length and thickness of the cord, and the board thickness and dimensions should be modified to your fishing situation.
- Moving fast and keeping a tight line are important keys to landing a fish because you usually do not know how good the hook-up is until after you land the fish. Do not slacken the line or the fish might “throw” the hook or lure. If you decide to use the gaff, move quickly (but not roughly) and haul the fish up.
Things You’ll Need
- Jigsaw
- Drill
- Plywood 1/2″
- Cord (if your main line is eight pound test, use some cord that is about 150 pound test)

Rally-Car Rivalry: 2011 Subaru WRX vs 2010 Mitsubishi Ralliart
