March 6: Battle of the Alamo
The Battle of the Alamo, a part of the Texas Revolution, ended on March 6, 1836, when Mexican troops under General Antonio López de Santa Anna regained the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas). Several months previously, rebellious Texians had driven all Mexican troops out of Mexican Texas. Up to 260 Texians were garrisoned in the Alamo at various times. On February 23, 1836, Santa Anna and 1,500 Mexican troops laid siege to the Alamo as the first step in a campaign to re-take Texas. In the final battle, all but two of the Texian defenders were killed, and 400–600 Mexican troops were killed or wounded. The battle has been the subject of numerous myths, spread by movie and television adaptations, including John Wayne’s 1960 film The Alamo. (more…)

February 20: The Battle of Alexander at Issus
The Battle of Alexander at Issus is a 1529 oil painting by German artist Albrecht Altdorfer, an early pioneer of landscape art and a founding member of the Danube school. It portrays the 333 BC Battle of Issus, in which Alexander the Great secured a decisive victory over Darius III of Persia and gained crucial leverage in his campaign against the Persian Empire. The painting is widely regarded as Altdorfer’s masterpiece, and exemplifies his affinity for scenes of monumental grandeur. William IV, Duke of Bavaria commissioned The Battle of Alexander at Issus in 1528, as part of a set of historical pieces that was to hang in his Munich residence. Modern commentators suggest that the painting, through its abundant use of anachronism, was intended to liken Alexander’s heroic victory at Issus to the contemporary European conflict with the Ottoman Empire. In particular, the defeat of Suleiman the Magnificent at the Siege of Vienna may have been an inspiration for Altdorfer. A religious undercurrent is detectable, especially in the extraordinary sky; this was probably inspired by the prophecies of Daniel and contemporary concern within the Church about an impending apocalypse. The Battle of Alexander at Issus and four of the others in William’s initial set are in the Alte Pinakothek art museum in Munich. (more…)

Dubai-bound flight delayed by ‘terror’ hoax
Two passengers on an Emirates Airline flight bound for Dubia were detained in Mumbai yesterday after authorities received a telephone tip claiming the pair were terrorists, reported The National. The Indian man and his wife were among 356 passengers and crew on board the Boeing 777 when the call was received, moments before the aircraft was scheduled to take off. The caller claimed the couple, thought to be in their 60s, were members of the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-i-Taiba, which India blames for plotting and carrying out the Mumbai siege in 2008. The two individuals were taken off the flight, but there was nothing in their background that would suggest any kind of terrorist activity, said the deputy commisioner of police in Mumbai.
