How to use Gmail’s new "Priority Inbox" which sorts mail for you
Priority Inbox in Gmail finds the messages that matter and sorts them for you, to prevent email overload. It does this by basing the importance on the emails you read and reply to. Here is how to start using it in your Gmail account.
Steps
-
Click on the colored line “New! Priority Inbox!” in the right hand corner of your Gmail screen.
- A pop-up box will open. This contains a video for you to watch and learn how the system works, and provides an opportunity for you to “Try it now” or to go back to business as usual.
- Click on “Try it now”.
- A box will appear showing you a set of emails, some it considers to be “important”, others not as important. If you agree, click “That looks right. Go to Priority Inbox!”.
-
If it has made any wrong choices, correct them by clicking on the plus or minus tabs to increase or decrease the mail’s importance. Then click to move on.
- Wait while Gmail activates Priority Inbox. This shouldn’t take long. Once done, you will see a highlighted line in the top center of your email box that says “You’re all set to use Priority Inbox!”
- You will now see that your in-box looks a little different:
- Important and unread are now listed first.
- Starred items are now brought into line as the next priority.
- All other emails are listed after the starred emails.
- If you don’t want to see the actual emails, you can collapse each set of headers using the plus or minus sign located in each header. The end result will appear very neat.
- You will now see that your in-box looks a little different:
- Read the email sent from Gmail. It will suggest:
- Reading priority emails first. These are the “Important and Unread” emails.
- Mark any emails requiring a follow-up with a star.
- Go through the “Everything Else” box when convenient.
-
Return to the Priority Inbox. If you leave Priority Inbox, click the link next to Inbox on Gmail’s side navigation.
-
Train your Priority Inbox. You can rectify mistakes Gmail makes in highlighting or demoting the importance of your emails by pressing the plus and minus tabs inside small arrow boxes that represent increasing or lowering the email’s importance. In this way the Priority Inbox quickly learns your preferences.
- Customize the Priority Inbox. You can customize the Priority Inbox as follows:
- Click on the headers, or go to “Settings”. A drop-down menu will appear allowing you to add or change a number of things, including labels, importance status, number of emails shown, hiding when empty, removal of the section and other options.
- Change back to the ways things used to be. If you discover that you don’t like using Priority Inbox, simply change it back. Do this by clicking “Inbox” on the left navigation or by hiding Priority Inbox completely from the Gmail Settings.
Video
Tips
- Use Gmail filters to mark the importance of certain emails. Choose “Always mark it as important” once you’ve set up the filter.
- Once an email from the Priority Inbox has been read, it will drop down to “Everything Else”. Star it if you still need it to remain in view.

Apple just launched their Facebook competitor called Ping. Here’s how you can try it
Ping is a music social network that was introduced with release of iTunes 10 on September 1, 2010. As with Twitter, you can follow others and be followed, keep tabs on your favorite artists, and post comments, pictures, videos, suggestions, etc., for others to read. Here’s how to use it.
Steps
-
Download or upgrade to iTunes 10. Go to the iTunes store and follow the “Download” prompt, or go straight to this page: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
- Before pressing “Download”, note the checked box “Email me New on iTunes and special iTunes offers.” Uncheck if you don’t want this to happen, otherwise leave it.
- Click on “Download Now”. Wait for it to download, then follow your computer’s prompts to update your iTunes – you will need to install, add any passwords, and agree to Apple’s terms and conditions. (Note: Turn off iTunes before seeking it to install.)
-
Return to your iTunes program and open it. It will look quite different from your previous iTunes. It will probably spend some time “creating artwork thumbnails”. Let it run!
-
Select Ping from the iTunes sidebar.
- If this is your first time using Ping, you will need to activate it and you may be prompted to update your browser – if so, follow the prompts on your computer screen. You will also need to identify yourself and key in your password.
-
Click “Turn on Ping”.
- Create a profile. Fill out the information about yourself when it asks you to “Create Your Profile”. You can upload or take a picture, tell where you live, write a little about yourself.
- Select the genres of music you like. You can choose to have these displayed automatically, manually, or not at all. Check the one that you prefer.
- You can also choose how people can follow you and what should be displayed on your page. Note! If you choose to allow people to follow you, they can see your profile information including your purchasing activity.
- Follow your favorite artists. Ping makes it easy to follow artists.
-
Find a favorite artist by searching from the Ping homepage or selecting one that Ping has chosen for you. Key the artist’s name into the search field, or select one recommended by Ping.
-
Click on the “Follow” tab located next to the artist’s name.
- You will also be able to see what your favorite artists likes.
- Keep an eye on status updates from your favorite artists. You can follow their feed, including seeing any photos or videos that they upload.
- Feel free to add comments and join into conversations with your favorite artists. You can read your artist’s reviews and also leave reviews of their work; your reviews are linked back to your Ping identity and others can read them too.
-
-
Follow your friends. You will be able to know what your friends are listening to, and be inspired by their music choices if you follow them.
-
Find your friends. Use the “Search People or Artists” search field to find your friends (or potential friends), or you can search by Facebook or by email. Alternately, follow people Ping recommends. Open a name you know and then click on the “Follow” tab and they become a part of your network. Hopefully they’ll follow you back!
- As with your favorite artist, you’ll be able to see what your friend is listening to and recommending.
- Check your friend’s follows and followers. Perhaps you’d like to follow some of them too.
-
- Keep up to date with local concerts. iTunes Ping includes a service for keep you updated on when concerts are occurring. You will also be able to tell if your friends are going.
- This service allows you to connect to purchasing tickets for a concert from Live Nation.
- Check Ping charts. These charts let you know what others in your network are listening to. You can check by song or album.
Tips
- Ping is built into the iTunes app on iPhone and iPod touch.
