Traveling Labor Day Weekend? 6 Tips to Help Avoid Traffic

If you are traveling at all this long weekend, you will probably hit some traffic. With a little work, you can either plan ahead and know what you are getting into, or see the traffic situation and plan to route around it. It’s not hard, here are a couple of tips to make traveling a little easier.

1. Check out conditions at Beat the Traffic in most major metro areas. They use Inrix data for some pretty detailed accounts of roadway slowdowns. You can elect to sign up for a two week free trial for their service that will allow you to plan your regularly used routes and get updates. They also have an iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and “mobile” set of solutions to help you while you are on the road.

2. Use Traffic.com’s solution to plan a route and see what the traffic conditions are before you leave. they can recommend alternates for you to consider that will make the trip faster. Type in your starting and ending addresses for turn by turn directions. At Traffic.com – It’s free.

3. Download the Inrix App for iPhone or Android where you can see traffic around you while on the road. I use this in combination with a GPS to get me around the worst spots: See trouble, pan the Inrix Map to see the last exit before the congestion, use the GPS to find my way around the issue to pop back on teh highway after the back-up. (Co-pilot recommended)

4. Get a traffic Enabled iPhone Navigation App – they are not that expensive and then you add on traffic as an option. Two I like are the TomTom (iTunes Link) and Navigon. TomTom US costs $49, and has an in App Traffic subscription for $20. Navigon has a Regional option (MyRegion) for only $29 and an annual traffic subscription (in App Purchase) for $20 also. Both give you traffic in and around major metro areas. I like having an iPhone navigation app because it’s with me all of the time. These Apps download the maps so they don’t need connectivity for navigation but do for traffic updates.

5. Buy a traffic enabled GPS – there are a ton out there, but two that are worth checking out are the TomTom XL 335TM (widescreen, text to speech, lifetime free map updates and traffic alerts – $129 right now), and the brand new Garmin Nuvi 3790T (super slim new design, landscape or portrait views, multi-touch display with advanced features and free traffic updates). Again these traffic updates are for most major metro areas and download over the FM band, so they are a little less detailed, but cover major roadways.

6. Leave in the middle of the night – way less fun; I recommend one of the other options.

How to Calculate Distance Travelled by Pacing

Pacing is the practice of calculating the distance you have traveled based on the number of steps you have taken. This can be a very handy piece of knowledge, especially if you’re out hiking or walking and you need to determine where you are on a trail or map.[1]

There are generally two types of pacing, namely single and double pacing. Single pacing is counting every single step you take, while double pacing counts only on right or left foot steps.

Steps

Track method

  1. Find a measuring resource. To find out what your pacing is, you will need some way to measure the distance you are going to cover. Some parks and cycling tracks have distances marked on the ground. A running track could also serve the purpose. Locate such a measuring resource so that you can work out your pacing using the following steps.

  2. Figure out whether you want to calculate your pacing in single or double steps. Double steps has the advantage of being half the number of steps to count!
  3. Go to the starting marker on the track. Choose a suitable length to check yourself against – 200 meters or 200 yards is a good distance to calculate your pacing fairly accurately.
  4. Walk the distance you have chosen and count your pacing as you move forward. When you reach the end, take note of the number and divide it by 2. You will then get the number of steps you take to cover 100 meters or 109 yards.
    • Somewhere between 55 to 70 double pacing steps is normal for most people. If you are using yards, 60 to 76 double paces is the normal range.
  5. Confirm your pacing by walking back the exact same distance you have covered. Calculate your pacing for 100 meters or 109 yards and check to see if it is the same. If it is not the same, average the number to find your usual level of pacing. If needed, you could pace another distance to confirm your pacing.

  6. Apply your knowledge of your pacing to distance measurement to simple activities to test out your accuracy.
    • Calculate the distance of a short walk, say from your home to a local store.
    • Calculate a walk around a park.
    • Calculate as you walk to work in the morning.

Wet feet method

  1. Find a clear sidewalk or pathway. Fetch a tape measure.
  2. Fill a bucket with water. Pour this water down the sidewalk or pathway where you are going to walk. Make sure there is enough water to pool.
  3. Start walking through the water at your usual pace. Continue to walk beyond the water for another 10 strides.

    • Walking through wet sand might also walk for this method, provided you have a tape measure handy.

  4. Measure the distance from the hell of your left footprint of each of the wet left footprints.
  5. Average the distance measured to gauge your distance covered.[2]

Tips

  • A person’s pacing is never consistent. Some factors that will affect the accuracy of pacing include:

    • Fatigue level – You walk more slowly when you are tired.
    • Weather – You walk more slowly in hot weather.
    • Terrain – Upward slopes cause lower pacing and downward slopes increase pacing.
    • Group walking – You may walk faster or slower depending on the group speed.
    • Carrying weight – The more weight on you, the slower you will walk.
    • Growth – If you are a teenager, your pacing should increase as you grow taller.
  • A pedometer or a GPS set to walking mode would help you to calculate the distance covered.

Warnings

  • Watch out for traffic, cyclists, and other people!

Things You’ll Need

  • A track with distance measurements painted on the ground; or
  • A bucket of water and a measuring tape

Trouble with Electronics in the Wild

It’s hard to keep in mind that all of these gadgets can get you into trouble as well as getting you out of trouble. Having a GPS in hand while traveling the backcountry isn’t so bad, but being able to use it is better. What’s even better than that? Having a map and compass as a back-up.

In an article today, the Boston Globe details a few mishaps due to over-use or over-reliance on technology. Some of it is just plain stupidity. while not all of their anecdotes point to a GPS, it is a good reminder to keep a good head on your shoulders, respect nature and use back-up systems when electronics sit between you and difficult consequences.

Ten things to keep in mind when going on a hike with a GPS

  1. Make sure you know how to use the GPS and how to return to your starting point. Mark your starting point, lodge, ranger station and car with waypoints that are named correctly. It will make navigating back to them easier.
  2. Make sure everyone knows how to navigate using the GPS. Don’t be the only one.
  3. Bring extra batteries for all of the electronics.
  4. Bring a map and compass – and better yet, know how to use them. If needed bring a tour book/ trail book – they can summarize the trail system and offer tips on local shelters if needed.
  5. Plan your hike and hike your plan. (Ripped that off from when I took SCUBA classes) When planning, it’s important to know what you are getting into; trail types, weather exposure, vertical ascent, overall distance, water crossings are all things to consider when matching the hike to the group’s capabilities.
  6. Leave that hike plan with someone. If you don’t show back up, they will know where to start looking…. because you hiked that plan right? Leave a copy of the plan in your car at the trailhead if not with another person.
  7. Bring the right clothing, water and food; and then some extra. When we hike the White Mountains, I am reminded to be humble when I recall the book “Not Without Peril ” which details how under-prepared, and/or over-egoed trekers got into trouble in the Presidential Range and died. I can’t tell you how many people I see walking up Mt Washington in shorts and a T-Shirt swinging a 20 ounce bottle as they hike…. wait a minute, I think that’s also a chapter in the book.
  8. Know when to turn back – just because you planned to summit, doesn’t mean that you have to when there are people in your party who clearly can’t make it or the weather turns bad.
  9. Bring a first aid kit; they can be small enough to fit in a Day Pack pocket and still be of good use on a hike.
  10. Have fun – GPS units can make hiking a lot more reliable and accessible when used smartly. It’s made hiking a lot more enjoyable and safe for us. As a result we are out hiking even more.

Facebook to unveil location feature (Guardian)

Facebook is set to unveil its new location features at an event in Palo Alto late tonight, our time. The site has been working on these features for months, enabling ‘places’ tags to video and audio back in March and, no doubt, carefully watching the surge in use of services like Foursquare and Gowalla. Both have built significant traction with audiences but are also building partnerships with fairly enthusiastic venues, who benefit from very explicit near real-time information about their most committed customers. And customers, in turn, get discounts and prizes if they check in the most. Photo by _Yuki_K_ on Flickr. Some rights reservedNone of this will be lost on Facebook, who have also reportedly expressed interest in buying the lesser-known location-based service (LBS) Hot Potato.LBS is certainly one of the hottest topics in technology right now, and after years of promises and experimentation is finally starting to take off thanks to a combination of interest in casual gaming, improved and widespread GPS in mobiles and the rise of apps, which has brought these services to a new audience. But as well as needing to be seen to innovate in this area, Facebook’s interest is ultimately commercial. Those fledgling deals with venues and retailers have massive potential, picking up on the trend of downturn-friendly sites like Groupon that offer discounts to teams of well-organised consumers.Nearly one-third of Facebook’s traffic is generated from mobiles, so adding auto-geotagging from mobiles to photos and possibly status updates is probable. The site could tag any location mention in a status update, on a wall, in a photo album – any content on the site, in short – as well as any geo-tagged media posted to it.Location will be probably added to Facebook’s Platform for third-party developers, meaning Foursquare et al could plug in to Facebook’s userbase. Eventually, we can expect a standalone tab for location, probably a map visualising the locations of your friends – if not now, with the launch, then eventually once the backlash has died down. And that’s the most significant point. While the early adopters will be quite happy to play with this tool (and in fact wonder why it took Facebook so long) the wider public are still very uncomfortable with location features. That’s a natural part of the technology adoption process, and also a symptom of the shifting peception of what is acceptably private and what is acceptably public. We are heading towards open, but cautiously, and it is right that these services are scrutinised to make them as robust and safe as possible. You can imagine the headlines.Facebook knows that, and the only thing that matters about adding location data to Facebook profiles is how secure and uncomplicated the privacy settings are. One person’s ‘granularity’ is another person’s ‘complicated’, and Facebook had better hope users can turn privacy up to 11. I’d argue that of all the features Facebook has launched, and every  momentary backlash, this is by far the biggest opportunity for a serious balls up. That’s down to Facebook’s scale of half a billion people, the public’s discomfort with the commercial uses of their data (at least for those who care to think about it) and the uniquely risky implications of location services that go wrong. If they get it right, on the other hand, it could finally deliver the promise of location-based-services to the mainstream. In technology at least, that’s big news.FacebookSocial networkingSocial mediaLocation based servicesFoursquareGowallaMobile phonesDigital mediaJemima Kissguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

JiWire – People Want Discounts While on the Go with Location Based Apps

Following up on my post yesterday, is some confirmation that there is a large audience of users out there who want and are open to discounts while on the go through their mobile phones. The discounts would be delivered through Location based Services – from Apps to ads on their mobile phones.

JiWire is reporting that 39% of mobile users find discounts as the most appealing ads while on the go are discount coupons. Ads that are location specific, and targeted offer immediate, relevant and actionable opportunities that matter to consumers.

Some highlights:

  • A majority of users want location specific ads
  • 36% of the on-the-go audience are interested in receiving locaiton based ads about stores that are close to them
  • 47% of men and 40% of women said that they were more likely to engage in an ad if it was relevant to their location
  • While 57% of 25-34 year olds would share their location for more relevant ads, only 24% of 65+ would – not surprising, but dramatically different nonetheless.

“The context of a location, rather than just a point on a map, provides the most relevant understanding of a consumer,” said David Staas, senior vice president of marketing at JiWire. “People today are demanding much more localized content as they spend more time on the go, creating a great opportunity for advertisers. Just as brands were challenged with how to ‘socialize’ themselves in the social media space, today brands need to think about how to ‘localize’ themselves with their consumers.”

As Apps like Fourquare, Facebook (pending), and Gowalla move to offer location specific merchandising and discounts, their market might will continue to rise given the receptivity outlined from the jiWire results. What will be more impressive is when generic ads start becoming more and more obviously location specific in their execution to capitalize on these findings.

How Do You Work Out Scale On A Map?

If it is a map you’re drawing, the scale is the ratio of map distance to real-world distance. If it is a published map, the scale is usually found near the legend. It will often be of the form
  1 in = 10 mi
or
  1 cm = 160 km
or
  1:125000

Here is a picture of different map scale indications.
(Note: The above scales are all different, not equivalent.)

6 Ways to Help Flood Victims in Pakistan

The August 2010 floods in Pakistan are the worst floods in living memory for Pakistan with an estimated 20 million people left homeless.[1] If you’re keen to help out in any way possible, here are some suggestions.

Steps

  1. Contact a local charity organization that is reputable, that you trust, and that is performing charity work in Pakistan. Ask them what is needed and the best means to provide it. In particular, most charities will probably want money as they can direct this to the exact items needed. In some cases, there will be a need for blankets, tents, food, water purification resources, etc. but your best bet is to ask first. Don’t assume that your charity can make use of actual items until you are sure. The following might be of some help:

    • Americans can text the word “SWAT” to the number 50555. Through this, you can donate $10 per SMS message to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to provide tents, clothing, food, clean water and medicine to Pakistan. This was announced by Hillary Clinton.
    • A number of aid organizations that are currently working hard to get relief to Pakistan are listed under “Tips” below.
  2. Volunteer to help directly. If you have the sort of skills that might be useful in Pakistan right now, and you can find an organization to link up with, consider volunteering. Nurses, doctors, carers, logistics operators, builders, transport operators, etc., are all possible jobs you could volunteer in if you have both the expertise and the backing/acceptance of a reputed organization helping in the efforts.
  3. Hold a donation drive either to raise money for the flood victims or collect goods that they need. You could do this at your workplace, school, college, club, etc., and donate all of the money raised on behalf of your group or organization.
  4. Participate in an athletic event to raise money for the flood victims, such as the UN Run for Peace. If you don’t want to join an organized event, consider running your own and donating all the funds raised.
  5. Listen to the TV, radio, and check out online news for updates as to what is needed to help out. There will be changing needs as the disaster’s consequences unfold and not forgetting about these needs as time goes on is a vital part of being an effective donor.
  6. Contribute to a project that helps to keep people informed about what’s going on concerning the flood crisis. Good places to check include sites such as the Pakistan Flood Map on Open Street Maps or the floods page on Wiki Pakistan.[2]

Tips

  • Organizations (charity, government, non-profits, etc.) helping with the Pakistan effort that you might consider contributing to include (check their websites direct):

    • Oxfam in your country
    • World Vision
    • CARE
    • UNICEF
    • Save the Children in your country
    • Doctors without Borders (medecins sans frontieres)[3]
    • International Medical Corps
    • International Rescue Committee
    • Islamic World Relief
    • Merlin USA
    • Red Cross in your country
    • Mercy Corps’ Pakistan Emergency Fund
    • The World Food Programme
    • BRAC Pakistan
    • AmeriCares
    • Concern Worldwide
  • You can check the track record of the charity you are donating to by visiting websites such as Charity Navigator or Guidestar. You may also want to read a copy of the charity’s annual report.
  • Some organizations will let you make monthly donations.

Things You’ll Need

  • Access to charity, etc., websites
  • Secure donation facilities

Naturally, driving groups are useful for commuters who travel from the suburbs to the city on a regular basis and would like to share specific tips about their route, but groups can also benefit fleets of professional drivers who belong to the same company, groups of friends travelling in a caravan of separate cars to a shared destination, people seeking cheap gas in a specific metro, motorcycle clubs, those looking to carpool, or any other grouping that waze users can dream up.

Driving groups allow users to receive focused road reports from the groups that they have joined. They also allow group members to keep track of one another via a shared group icon next to each member’s avatar on the map. Users will actually be able to see other members of their group as they advance in their trip on the map towards a destination. This layer of visual information can be very useful to any number of groups who want to stay informed as they travel.

And for those who opt in and would like to connect beyond the waze platform, each member’s Twitter and Facebook profiles are clickable on the map to make connecting easy. Users can create or join as many groups as they like, and to continue the conversation even further, group owners are encouraged to set up a dedicated Twitter account and Facebook fan page. In this first version available on iPhone and Android only, groups are public and anyone can join them.

In the future, it will be possible to create private groups, too. Some group examples:

  • San Francisco –> Mountain View
  • Seattle –> Redmond
  • Cheap Gas in Austin, TX
  • Cabulous Cabbies
  • NYC to The Hamptons

“Waze is powered by communities working together to improve their everyday driving experience, and that’s why we’re happy to introduce these new driving groups to our users,” says Noam Bardin, waze’s CEO. “Our new driving groups will empower localized, geography specific groups to emerge and share real time information. We’re looking forward to seeing the creative groups that they’ll come up with, and expect our driving communities, worldwide, to really benefit from this new functionality.”
