Journalism in the Gulf is losing its appeal | Hussain Ahmad (Guardian)

Indian journalists have long formed the backbone of the media in the Gulf but it’s a decreasingly rewarding career moveRecently a friend of mine who wanted to start a magazine in a Gulf country asked a prominent journalist in India to look for an editor to work with him. My friend wanted someone with modest experience and the salary offered was decent. After two months came the reply: the search in India had turned up nothing and, more surprisingly, many young journalists who were contacted didn’t even bother to get the details of the offer. This is not unusual. Across the Gulf, an increasing number of newspapers and other publications are finding it difficult to recruit journalists from India, and some have to contend with a depleting staff. Also, many Indians who joined the Gulf media recently have returned home. This development marks a seismic change in the short history of English journalism in the Gulf. For decades, Indians have formed the backbone of the region’s English-language press and currently constitute around 70% of its journalists. So why is the Gulf losing its allure for Indian journalists? First, India is witnessing a media boom, which has resulted in an unprecedented surge in salaries. Television channels are proliferating, newspapers are on an expansion spree and new players are entering the market ? all of which have opened up an Eldorado of opportunities for local journalists. At the same time in the Gulf, salaries haven’t kept pace with galloping inflation due to the availability of cheap labour from a number of countries.Secondly, journalism in the Gulf is not held in high esteem by media professionals in India, and Gulf experience adds no value to one’s CV. Those who have had a long stint in the region admit it has been a drain on their creativity and a corrosive influence. There is no professional growth for a large majority, no freedom of expression and no competition, and journalism practised there is, at best, the PR variety.Investigation into sensitive issues is unheard of. The Gulf governments tend to have an aversion to public exposure of anything negative and detest controversies. Even the local population doesn’t expect foreigners to dig up anything murky, as it is seen as an intrusion. The lines are clearly drawn and foreign journalists should not cross them ? unless they are prepared for a one-way ticket home.In the Gulf, it’s not governments alone that influence news. Commenting on an article I wrote in Cif recently about migration to the Gulf from the Indian state of Kerala, a reader said Indian journalists in the Gulf should highlight the exploitation of workers by companies, especially those managed by Indians. He was perhaps alluding to the failure of Indian journalists to expose the violations committed by their own countrymen. This failure is a fact and is a rank example of both the helplessness and degeneration of Indian media workers. Businessmen are the biggest dispensers of gifts and favours to journalists, and the latter wouldn’t do anything to invite their displeasure. Even if a few want to expose their misdeeds, they may not succeed because businessmen, as advertisers, have immense influence over media owners. This doesn’t mean they routinely flout the laws, but that free and fair reporting is very tough.Indian journalists working in the Gulf miss the influence and social status they enjoy back home. India has a free media and journalists have easy access to all centres of power. Politicians, bureaucrats and celebrities court them, and vice versa. Steady, stunning exposés of corruption in high places, controversies involving celebrities, and a stream of sensational stories make their career exciting. For those who are used to such heady stuff, reporting on the routine activities of expatriate organisations and the inauguration of neighbourhood supermarkets in a Gulf country will appear not only utterly stupefying, but even outright trash. The English-language media in this region will continue to be dominated by foreigners, Indians or others, for a long time. Gulf citizens are a rare sight in the newsrooms. Despite the vigorous nationalisation of jobs being undertaken by governments, there is no talk of representation of Gulf nationals in the English-language media. The reason: this is a creative profession that requires both skills and experience to excel, and Gulf citizens who enter the field don’t have the patience to acquire both ? at least, not for the salaries they are paid. The new trend doesn’t mean that Indians will soon empty out of the newsrooms. India has a huge reservoir of manpower; so replacement will not be a problem. But quality will certainly be a casualty if managements don’t take corrective steps to retain and attract talent. While I was writing this, my mobile phone rang. I answered the call and my colleague broke the news: he has submitted his resignation.Middle East & the mediaIndiaMiddle EastNewspapers & magazinesHussain Ahmadguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Fitch says Kuwaiti banks to remain under pressure

Credit rating agency Fitch has said that the profitability of most Kuwaiti lenders is expected to remain pressured by high impairment charges in 2010, as banks build up loan loss reserves due to the sharp deterioration in asset quality seen in 2009, Arab Times has reported. At over half of banking system loans, the high exposure of Kuwaiti banks’ to more volatile sectors including investment companies, real estate, construction and lending for the purchase of equities, exposes banks to high market-induced credit risk, Fitch said.

Trouble with Electronics in the Wild

It’s hard to keep in mind that all of these gadgets can get you into trouble as well as getting you out of trouble. Having a GPS in hand while traveling the backcountry isn’t so bad, but being able to use it is better. What’s even better than that? Having a map and compass as a back-up.

In an article today, the Boston Globe details a few mishaps due to over-use or over-reliance on technology. Some of it is just plain stupidity. while not all of their anecdotes point to a GPS, it is a good reminder to keep a good head on your shoulders, respect nature and use back-up systems when electronics sit between you and difficult consequences.

Ten things to keep in mind when going on a hike with a GPS

    1. Make sure you know how to use the GPS and how to return to your starting point. Mark your starting point, lodge, ranger station and car with waypoints that are named correctly. It will make navigating back to them easier.
    2. Make sure everyone knows how to navigate using the GPS. Don’t be the only one.
    3. Bring extra batteries for all of the electronics.
    4. Bring a map and compass – and better yet, know how to use them. If needed bring a tour book/ trail book – they can summarize the trail system and offer tips on local shelters if needed.
    5. Plan your hike and hike your plan. (Ripped that off from when I took SCUBA classes) When planning, it’s important to know what you are getting into; trail types, weather exposure, vertical ascent, overall distance, water crossings are all things to consider when matching the hike to the group’s capabilities.
    6. Leave that hike plan with someone. If you don’t show back up, they will know where to start looking…. because you hiked that plan right? Leave a copy of the plan in your car at the trailhead if not with another person.
    7. Bring the right clothing, water and food; and then some extra. When we hike the White Mountains, I am reminded to be humble when I recall the book “Not Without Peril ” which details how under-prepared, and/or over-egoed trekers got into trouble in the Presidential Range and died. I can’t tell you how many people I see walking up Mt Washington in shorts and a T-Shirt swinging a 20 ounce bottle as they hike…. wait a minute, I think that’s also a chapter in the book.
    8. Know when to turn back – just because you planned to summit, doesn’t mean that you have to when there are people in your party who clearly can’t make it or the weather turns bad.
    9. Bring a first aid kit; they can be small enough to fit in a Day Pack pocket and still be of good use on a hike.
    10. Have fun – GPS units can make hiking a lot more reliable and accessible when used smartly. It’s made hiking a lot more enjoyable and safe for us. As a result we are out hiking even more.

More on that article at the Boston Globe

Some of my favorite Handheld GPS units are: The Garmin eTrex Legend HCx, The Garmin Dakota 20, The Garmin Oregon 400t, the new Garmin GPSMap 62St, the Delorme PN-40 and the new Delorme PN-60W

5 Ways to Make Sure You’re Getting Enough Vitamin D

Vitamin D is now being touted as a vitamin capable of reducing cancer rates by as much as 60 – 70%, following rigorous scientific studies.[1] This is of special interest to people living in climates where levels of sunshine are low, and for those who are indoors a lot, such as office workers. Vitamin D is an important source of strong bones as well, and is of significance in helping to prevent such diseases as osteoarthritis, multiple sclerosis, juvenile diabetes, etc.[2]

    Steps

    1. Understand what vitamin D is. It is a fat soluble vitamin.[3] It is found in certain foods and also is synthesized by our bodies from sunshine. Sunshine is the most important source of vitamin D – the UV rays in sunshine trigger the synthesis in our skin.

      • Daily intake amounts are recommended at 200 I.U. daily for birth to 50; 400 I.U. daily for ages 51 to 70; and 600 I.U. daily for over 70.[4][5] Note that these amounts are considered to be erring on the low side and are likely to be revised shortly.
    2. Improve your food sources of vitamin D. Be aware that this is a “supplement” and not a “substitute” for sunshine though, as it is generally not possible to get enough amounts of vitamin D through food alone.[6] There are two possible food sources, namely foods that have been fortified with vitamin D during the manufacturing process and foods that contain vitamin D naturally:
      • Fortified foods are usually milk and breakfast cereals. Read the nutrition labels to see if vitamin D has been added.
      • The best source of food vitamin D is found in fish. Salmon, mackerel, tuna, and sardines are excellent sources. If you can stomach it, cod liver oil is also a good source.
      • Egg yolks, margarine, cheese, and beef liver also have small amounts of vitamin D.[7]
    3. Improve your access to sunshine, with care. It is a balancing exercise between not enough and too much sunshine. You do not want to burn or over-expose your skin. The solution to this is simple – go into the sun for 10 to 20 minutes twice a week before you wear sunscreen.
      • In summer, try to avoid staying outside too long during the 11 – 3pm period when the sun is at its strongest. UV radiation still causes skin cancer, resulting in an estimated 1.5 million cases in the US every year.[8]
      • Use sunscreen after this initial sun exposure. Sunscreen should continue to be used to protect your skin against the harmful effects of the sun’s rays but it will block the amount of UV rays. However, anything over 8 SPF will reduce your absorption rate, although it is unlikely you could slather yourself so completely as to block out all vitamin D.[9]
    4. Take vitamin D supplements. Taking supplements may be an important part of a carefully planned diet where adequate vitamin D cannot be obtained from natural sources.
      • Vitamin D’s effects are boosted when taken in conjunction with calcium, and vitamin D is essential for the proper absorption of calcium in the gut, as well as for the remodeling and growth of bones. so you may wish to consider this as well.[10]
      • Seek advice from your health care professional as to dosage, suitability for you and brand quality suggestions.
    5. Get tested. Recent studies show that optimal serum vitamin D is at least 75 nmol/L. Concentrations of 90-100 nmol/L may confer even better health benefits.

    Video

    Tips

    • Take advantage of the sun after you remove the sunscreen in the later part of the day. Obviously this is harder to do, as you will need to shower to remove the product but it might be an option if you are exercising after work etc.
    • Keep tabs on your caffeine intake. Caffeine may interfere with the absorption of vitamin D.
    • Take greater care when exposing infants, toddlers and children to the sun. They should get sun exposure regularly but take the usual precautions for sun safety, including wearing hats and long-sleeved clothing.

    Warnings

    • People at risk of vitamin D deficiency include:

      • Rarely venturing outdoors, sun-phobic
      • Poor nutrition
      • Babies exclusively breast-fed[11]
      • Suffering a fat malabsorption disease
      • Wearing head to toe clothing daily
      • The elderly (skin absorption is less effective) or being indoors all day, in a nursing home, etc.
      • Some strict dietary regimes.
    • Complete cloud cover reduces UV energy by 50%; shade (including that produced by severe pollution) reduces it by 60%. UVB radiation does not penetrate glass, so exposure to sunshine indoors through a window does not produce vitamin D.[12]

    Things You’ll Need

    • Outdoor activities to get you outside
    • Sunscreen if spending more than 20 minutes outdoors at any time
    • Vitamin D enriched foods

How to Respond If You Get Pricked by a Dirty Needle at Work

The potential for exposure to diseases such as hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), or HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) through needle stick injuries is high for certain workers, especially medical staff and health care workers. Indeed, it is estimated that some 600,000 to 800,000 needle stick injuries occur in US health care workers every year.[1] People involved in jobs such as garbage removal, cleaning, housekeeping, tattoo artists, catering, etc., are also at risk of being pricked by a syringe or needles thrown on the street, in bedding, in bathrooms etc.

A needle stick injury can happen as easily as accidentally pricking a finger with a contaminated needle. The use of precautionary latex gloves can minimize exposure to disease but there is no guarantee that a needle stick injury won’t occur in any field of work.

If a needle stick injury occurs, it is vital to follow precautionary measures. This article explains how to respond to a needle stick injury, especially for workers most prone to the possibility.

    Steps

    1. Encourage bleeding at the site of injury. This means trying to squeeze out the excess blood and to encourage bleeding. This is done so that infected on site entry of the virus is minimized and expelled out of the body, rather than encouraging entry into the bloodstream. Once the virus enters your bloodstream, it will start to sero-convert and multiply. (See below for a definition of “sero-conversion”.)

      • Wash the site of the needle stick or sharp injury with soap and water.[2]
      • Flush splashes to nose, mouth, or skin with water.[3]
      • Irrigate eyes with saline, clean water or sterile irrigants.[4]
      • Seek medical attention. You might need a tetanus shot, depending on your prior history.[5]
    2. Do not panic. If you follow the protocols rigidly and correctly, sero-conversion is not likely to occur. Sero-conversion simply means that infected blood mixes with your own, contaminates it and all your blood now gets infected with HIV over a period of time. Scientists have proven that sero-conversion due to needle stick injuries for HIV is about 0.03 percent.[6] This percentage is extremely low and preventative prophylactic medication will greatly decrease the possibility of infection. On the other hand, the risk for hepatitis transference is much higher (about 30% for Hepatitis B and about 10% for Hepatitis C), so swift action is essential, as well as preventative measures (i.e., being vaccinated against Hepatitis).[7]
    3. Check HIV status of both yourself (or the worker affected) and the person whose blood has been transferred.
      • Check the HIV status of the person whose blood you have been exposed to. Hospitals and other medical facilities have rapid tests available to give a confirmed HIV status of the individual. This has to be done by meeting the correct ethical requirements. Permission or consent has to be given by the patient, if this requirement is not already in place.
      • Check your own HIV status if your status is not known. If you are negative and exposure patient is also negative, you have very little to worry about.
    4. Take prophylactic medication (known as post exposure prophylaxis, or PEP) preferably within an hour if the person you have been exposed to, is HIV positive and your status is HIV negative.[8] Anti-retroviral drugs can reduce the rate of transmission if given soon after possible infection.[9] All clinics and hospitals have a protocol in place for prompt action when responding to needle stick injuries.

    5. Have follow up testing and medical supervision of your recovery. This should be done at required intervals. This is done to exclude the possibility of being in the ” window period” of the person you were exposed to. A “window period ” refers to the time when a person exposed to the virus still tests negative, while the virus is multiplying and trying to cause infection. This implies a low viral load that is present in blood.

      • Retesting for HCV antibodies usually occurs six weeks after the incident, and again at four to six months.[10]
      • Retesting for HIV exposure usually occurs at six weeks, three, six, and 12 months to look for HIV antibodies.[11]
    6. Report the incident. Check the reporting procedures of your workplace. It is important to let your workplace know what has happened, and the statistics so gathered can help to improve workplace practices for everyone’s future safety. This includes injuries with sterile, “clean” sticks.[12]

    Workplace Prevention and Knowledge

    1. Familiarize or update yourself on what you should do in your workplace if a needle stick injury occurs.

      • Put in place a plan on what action to take if there isn’t already one in place. This is vital, whether it is for you, a colleague, friend or acquaintance who might require your assistance and prompt action.
    2. Seek further advice about the do’s and don’ts regarding needle stick injuries. This information is freely available on any telephonic helpline or is physically available at pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, and other medical care centers.
    3. Avoid unnecessary distractions when working with needles and syringes. Concentrate on your work and on what you are currently doing at all times.

      • It is very easy to brush over a needle stick prior to its being taped down, etc.; keep this in mind.
      • Avoid looking away or working in bad light while dealing with the needle stick.
      • Be careful with restless, or panicking patients who can easily move as you insert or withdraw the needle. Reassure them and only insert the needle when you’re sure it is safe to do so.
    4. Ensure safe working practices in a health care environment at all times – the World Health Organization recommends the following for workplaces dealing with needle sharps:[13]
      • Hand wash after direct contact with patients.
      • Use protective barriers such as gloves, gowns, aprons, masks, and goggles when in direct contact with blood and other body fluids.
      • Collect and dispose of needles and sharps safely. Use puncture- and liquid- proof boxes in each patient care area.
      • Prevent two-handed recapping of needles. Use the one handed needle capping technique.
      • Cover all cuts and abrasions with a waterproof dressing.
      • Promptly and carefully clean up spills of blood and other body fluids.
      • Use a safe system for health care waste management and disposal.
    5. Ensure safe working practices in other workplace environments.
      • Wear appropriate clothing and protective gear when handling potentially dangerous items such as garbage bags or picking up piles of garbage.
      • Take care when sticking your hands into places you cannot see, such as sinks of water, holes, the backs of beds and sofas, etc.
      • Wear solid footwear when walking through or working in areas known for drug-use, such as parks, beaches, public transportation hubs, etc.

    Three Year Exposure

Take a look at these photos by German photography artist Michael Wesely. Using a self-built pinhole camera, he captured the light of his objects for up to 3 years.

In 2001 he was invited to use his technique to record the re-development of the MOMA in New York. He set up four cameras in four different corners and photographed the destruction and re-building of the MoMa until 2004. Check out more of his photos here.
