Sa Re Ga Map Pa Singing Superstar: First Look

Why is India’s oldest singing competition show also the best? There are several reasons which we’ll talk about – but if I had to summarize I’d say that it deftly mixes tremendous talent with tremendous whackiness.

How does it do so? Well, for one SRGMP enforces some pretty high standards of singing. Remember how Shreeram on Indian Idol used to get wah, wahs for every peformance of his? On this show, he’d be tested at best and pulled apart most days. Because SRGMP has a rich history on Indian TV and has conjured some of the notable playback singers of today (Sonu Nigaam, Shreya Ghoshal, Kunal Ganjawala, Himani Kapoor, Ujjaini, Raja Hasan), it has a solid reputation as a star making show.

Then there is the tacky craziness. How does one go about doing that? You have to throw all kinds of edgy characters in the mix and hit the ON button. This is exactly what SRGMP does. Let me give you a few examples.

Early on in the highly enjoyable audtion episodes, a judge – who shall remain unnamed – used to come on the show wearing a cap that had "MARSEILLES" printed on it vertically. Whenever he sat down, all I could see was the word "ARSE". This would keep me in chuckles even when the show dragged. Now this can’t be staged – it just happens.

Yet another example: how many times has Salman Khan come on shows to shill for his movies? Many times. Usually everyone on the show will prostrate themselves in front of him and swoon and such like. Salman will say some "achha insaan" type stuff, come on stage and shake his hips. Much will be made of him. But have you ever seen a fawning fan make a request to hoist Salman on his shoulders? That happened on SRGMP. And that’s just last week! You just have to hope that the personalities you’ve picked deliver entertainment for you, which on this show they do.

Speaking of which, how about the host and those judges?

SRGMP is hosted in a laid back style by Purab Kohli (Rock On). Think previous host Aditya Narayan, but with a dash (just a dash so far) of personality. Purab often shows up in outfits that remind me of Star Trek episodes (the William Shatner ones), sometimes combs his hair and refers to the judges as MENTOS. This I think is supposed to be "mentors" but clearly Purab is all about sweet stuff and candy. Purab also emits dhaasu dialogs like "Guru sishya ko bhagwaan dikhate hai!" I don’t quite understand most of it but it sure sounds impressive.

There are five judges on this show, divided into three gharaanas. Vishal and Shekhar head up The Hit Squad. Vishal comes dressed in rockeasy T-shirts and is at his best when he’s ticked off. Once some dude with a really sad face came to the auditions all the way from Australia. Just as he was getting annoying, Vishal summarily dismissed the hopeful, who promptly went behind the stage and whined about how he wasn’t given a chance. This was pretty darn funny.

Vishal’s composing partner Shekhar has recently allowed his beard to defeat his stubble and shows up looking squeeky clean handsome. He is the show’s sur ka pujari, carefully bringing contestants down to earth when they aren’t meeting the show’s standards.

When the contestants were divided into gharanas – a brief ceremony called Gonda (which sounds mildly obscene if you ask me) – Vishal and Shekhar made some comments about how they were all going to enjoy themselves. Clearly, the Hit Squad is all about FUN.

Then there is one of Indian films’ most underrated singers: Daler Mehndi. Let me start by saying that when all the judges first arrived on the show in a ricksha, Daler came driving one. Daler wears flashy jackets, unleashes his nuclear powered voice at appropriate times and breaks out in Punjabi when he’s overwhelmed. Often he’ll talk about how he had to go through so much beizzati to become a star himself. This makes the contestants nervous because they don’t know how to react.

During his Gonda, Daler sang some devotional prayer. This moved the memsaab to tears and made me chuckle. Clearly Judge Tunaktunak’s gharana is all about DEVOTION.

Finally there are judges Sajid and Wajid - perveyors of tremendous band-baaja music. Their pairing with Salman Khan is a match made in heaven and has spiralled them to fame. Sajid plays the nice guy, often referring to everyone as "brother" unless you are Salman Khan in which case he calls you "bhai". Once Sajid was so impressed with a contestant that he gave him Rs 501. A little later he went back on stage and took it back. Yes, don’t ask!

Wajid on the other hand has a bit of a mountain man air about him, smiles a lot and flirts with the female contestants incessantly. He also says things like "Kya Baat Hai" and "Jiyo" but has been sadly low key since the audtions ended. Both brothers lead the Veer gharana and start proceedings by singing "Veera, veera, veeraack!" which is tremendously amusing.

During the Gonda, the Veeraack Brothers started scarfing sweets. Clearly this gharana is all about FOOD.

Lest you think SRGMP is all random craziness, I should point out how skillfully the producers bring everything together to generate this much fun. Take the set for example. The contestants sing on a gigantic star, which represents their potential. They sit with the backdrop of the Star of David and sing bhajans and qawaalis, which represents how music transcends religion. And they sing in front of a backdrop that looks like Tetris, which represents that this show is, after all, a game.

How clever is THAT?!

Congress has more to walk via the by-election route

The much-publicized Bangalore-Bellary padayatra is over. The response from the people en route was rousing. Congressmen are in high spirits. They also got a shabhashi from the high command. But one question has been bothering them. Will the fruits of this hard labour turn into votes? And the day to test the waters has come sooner than expected. Two assembly by-elections are due in September. One in Gulbarga South and another in Kadur. One was held by the BJP and another by the Congress till the demise of the two MLAs.

An acid test, indeed. The Congress will have to win both seats with a comfortable margin to not only herald its comeback but also arrest the BJP in its tracks. In Gulbarga South, it has fielded young Ajay Singh, son of former CM and strongman Dharam Singh. He is a doctor by profession but no novice to politics. He has been ably nurturing his father’s assembly constituency Jewargi for some time. His victory is important for the Congress. One, it will provide a shock to the BJP, which held the seat. Two, it will help pump in the much-needed young blood into the Congress leadership. Will Ajay’s success prove to be a turning point? If he wins, he has a bright future. Particularly when young Rahul Gandhi is emerging as a strong power centre in the national party.

Ajay has a tough job on hand. The JD(S) has stepped in by fielding Aruna Patil, wife of the BJP MLA whose death necessitated the by-election. She is upset with the BJP for not giving her a ticket. The BJP has fielded MLC Sashil Namoshi. Ajay would have wished the JD(S) had allowed him to fight the BJP single-handedly. It would make his task easier. But the JD(S) has its own game plan. Ajay will have to ensure that the JD(S) doesn’t cut into Congress vote banks. Plus, he will have to lure those who voted for the BJP last time. Not an easy task. Particularly because this is his first electoral battle. Will the padayatra’s success help him?

The Kadur seat is a little complicated for the Congress. It has fielded K M Kemparaju, brother of the deceased MLA, hoping to cash in on the sympathy factor. The JD(S) has fielded Y S V Datta, party spokesman and MLC. The BJP nominee is Y C Vishwanath, who had unsuccessfully contested the last assembly elections. The Congress will have to retain the seat to prove that it is on a winning spree. As in the case of Gulbarga South, the JD(S) will be a thorn in its flesh. Datta is no novice. Deve Gowda and sons depend upon him a lot. He is their backroom boy. Though he is a council member, they want him in the assembly to help voice the party’s views on issues. The BJP is certain to move heaven and earth to snatch the seat. And so, it’ll be no cakewalk for the Congress.

The Congress has been struggling to bounce back. It lacked unity. Every leader aspired to become the CM. Ego problems led to creation of groups. Aged leaders refused to encourage young and bright partymen. New entrants found themselves unwanted. Love-hate relationship with the JD(S) has added to its problems. The padayatra may or may not have helped it take on the BJP and the Reddy brothers. But it has definitely helped partymen bond well. If the party is keen on getting back on its tracks, it shouldn’t lose the momentum the padayatra created. The BJP is going strong, in spite of all odds. And the JD(S) is fishing in troubled waters.

PARTING SHOT

Sorry to see you so apologetic, Mr CM

These days chief minister Yeddyurappa has been cutting a sorry figure in public. When he is confronted with a problem he at once tenders an apology. Be it power shutdowns, a minister’s road rage or an attack on scribes by some officials. The number of apologies total 17, according to some who have kept track. Mr CM, this shows you in a bad light. Better crack down on erring ministers and officials, and ensure that problems are resolved. We need a CM who delivers, not one who keeps saying sorry.
