3D illusion of child gets drivers to brake
A school in Canada is using a weird 3D optical illusion of a young girl crossing the road to rein in rowdy drivers.
The image of a girl pursuing a ball is painted on the road and lengthened to make it seem three-dimensional, viewed from an approaching car.

Gear up to have a ball
Gear up to have a ball
How to Teach Juggling
A wise juggler once said that nobody ever teaches someone how to juggle; they simply show someone how to teach themselves. The role of the teacher then is more to encourage than to instruct. Still, by breaking things down into the simplest process, you can set someone up for success.
The method will change based on who you are teaching (young or old, athletic or otherwise) and how many people you are teaching (one on one, a small group or a whole class), but the basics will stay the same.
Steps
-
Choose the right object. Using the right juggling ball makes all the difference when you’re getting started. Using a solid ball will frustrate the student because it will roll away when they drop. Similarly, a ball that bounces can be mayhem for the beginner. For this reason, choose a beanbag or beanball that will stay put when it is dropped.
- Choose the weight carefully. Anything over 8 ounces (226 g) will become really heavy after prolonged juggling.
- Start with one object. Your student might be disappointed by this since there’s no fun in simply throwing an object from one hand to the other, but it will help to remind him or her that when juggling three balls, you are actually only throwing one ball at a time, while holding the other two.
-
Focus on proper technique. The ball should pop off your student’s hand rather than rolling off their fingertips. Watch the ball as it flies from one hand to the other. If it is spinning, your student is throwing incorrectly.
- Focus on consistency. Still only using one ball, encourage your student to toss back and forth and to keep the ball on a plane in front of him or her. Your student should not have to reach out or in to make a catch.
- Focus on form. The hands should remain level, slightly above the beltline. The elbows should be bent 90 degrees. The throw should come from the forearm and not the wrist, so encourage your student to keep their wrists locked.
- Add the second ball. This is the most important step, as you will now be teaching the exchange. This is the nearly simultaneous catch and throw that is at the foundation of juggling. Have your student start with one ball in each hand. Throw from the weak hand (left if right handed, right if left handed) and as the throw comes down toward the opposing hand, toss the second ball.
- If done correctly, the hand motion for the throw should leave the palm in perfect position to catch the first ball. The second throw should sweep under the first.
- Practice. At this point your student will be eager to move on and get to the three ball juggle, but you should encourage them to work on the two ball exchange until every throw is going to about the same height.
- Switch hands. Juggling is an ambidextrous skill, so as soon as your student gets the exchange down with their strong hand, have them switch to the other hand. Your student will still be using only two balls, but will make the first throw with their strong hand and the exchange with the weak hand.
- Add the third ball. Once the student is exchanging the ball well with both hands, they are ready to take the next step. Pat your student on the back and tell them that they’ve already learned to juggle. They might doubt that since they still haven’t added the third ball yet, but the hardest part is over.
- Have your student start with one ball in their weak hand and two in their strong hand.
- Begin with a single throw from the strong hand and then make one exchange after the other.
- Practice some more. There is no substitute for repetition. This is where the skill of the teacher is really tested. Most students will give up before they master this basic pattern, but with plenty of encouragement and corrective advice, you can make all the difference.
Tips
- When teaching younger kids, it is often best to start with scarves rather than balls. Scarves move much slower and give the student more time to adjust to a bad throw or catch.
- The biggest problem new jugglers have is what is known as the “Jogging Juggler” syndrome. Each throw goes forward a little bit so they find themselves chasing after an increasingly chaotic pattern. Tell your student to practice in front of a wall with about a foot between their knuckles and the plaster and this will solve the problem quickly.
- Remind your student early and often that dropping is all a part of learning.
Things You’ll Need
- Juggling balls, scarves, etc.

Time to give Kohli a chance
It’s a do-or-die game for both India and New Zealand. The media is abuzz with reports that the pitch will have a green-top. I, however, doubt it. Still, I must say that there has been enough movement on the surface to give a fair chance to the bat as well as the ball.

How to Make a Picture Frame from a CD Case
Make use of spare or unwanted CD cases by turning them into a photo frame. This easy and creative craft project makes use of “old junk” and provides you with a cool way to display your favorite photos.
Steps
- Gather the supplies. These are listed below in “Things You’ll Need”. Lay them out on a flat, clean working surface.
-
Find the picture you’d like framed. Lay it on top of the CD case. Check to see whether it fits in the portion where the CD would normally go. If not, trim it to the appropriate size.
-
Open up the CD case. Remove the CD holding portion (usually made from opaque plastic). Remove the paper artwork as well – see Remove the Back Art from a CD Case.
-
Take off the lid as well (the part that opens up). Do this carefully, so as not to snap anything.
-
-
Cut off enough foil to cover the back of the CD case. When you cut the square, leave a little extra around the edges, so that you fold the foil over the back.
- If using brand new foil, you can either leave the tin foil the way it is, or squish it into a ball and re-open it to give it a crinkled effect.
-
If using the recycled foil, it will already have a “crinkled” appearance.
-
Cover the back part of the CD. Fold the foil around the edges to the back of the CD backing, so that it’s secure. Tape if needed.
- Smooth out any wrinkles or bumps, including down the edges.
-
Take your selected picture. Double check that it still fits (it should do unless you’ve bungled the width of the foil when folding). Put 3 or 4 balls of tape on the back of the image; alternately, if the image fits snugly enough, you may not need to use tape – just check it first.
- Press the picture into the tin foil portion where it looks best.
-
Put the top of the CD case back on. You might need to unwrap a little of your folding work to locate it but it’s fine to push right through the foil to reattach the lid. You will notice that there is a gap where the CD paper artwork used to fill.
- Fold a rectangular strip the width of the gap, with enough length at each end to fold around the CD case. Don’t attach it just yet, as you will need to open the case again for the next step.
- Using the hanging thread that you have, create a hanging loop.
-
Slide each end of the thread through the top slots (holes) of the CD lid. You can use a toothpick to help push through the thread if needed.
-
Tie knots in each end of the thread. If the thread you are using is very thin, you might need to wrap around tape as well to create enough of a knotted bump. Cut off any excess length under the knot.
- Pull the thread up evenly and the knots should keep the thread from slipping through the slots.
-
-
Attach the silver rectangular piece of foil over the gap on the CD lid. Use tape to attach it at the back for added security.
-
Hang it up! It’s all done. Now you can put it on your bulletin board or hang from nails on the wall; whatever you wish! It’s funky and cool, and gives a nice feel to your room.
Video
Tips
- If you care to, you can put multiple CD cases on one string. Just tie knots on the outside of the CD case holes, so that they don’t slide into each other when you hang them up.
- Colored foils are also an excellent choice; try to keep your Easter egg or Christmas chocolate covers to use for this purpose.
- If you can’t find a CD case with holes in the end, then you can get some of the cheap ones with no name slot. In this case, there is probably enough of an open indentation for you to hang the case directly onto picture hook nails.
Things You’ll Need
- An empty CD case – remove the lyrics sheet, and it should have slots or holes for inserting the hanging thread
- Aluminum foil – it can be brand new, or stick with the recycled theme and reuse old foil that has been cleaned and dried
- A suitable picture to be framed – cut down to size if needed
- Scotch or similar transparent tape
- String, yarn, embroidery floss, ribbon, etc. – whatever you have available for hanging the picture with
- A toothpick
- Scissors

Let’s not kill gamesmanship
Suraj Randiv will probably never break any law again; earlier this week, he merely exploited a flaw in the rule-book to deny Virender Sehwag a century and landed himself in the centre of an unwarranted, almost comical, controversy.
After playing just 16 ODIs, and as an impressionable rookie, at this level, he would have learnt his first valuable lesson: trifling with the law is one thing; taking on a big international player and a more powerful Board is quite another.
He will, of course, pay a price for his cheekiness, when he comes face to face with Sehwag again: indeed, the one-match ban might well seem like nothing when the Indian maverick goes after him. He will soon know that Sehwag is really not as kind or forgiving as he appears.
The big question being asked in the aftermath is, however, laughable: does the furore in India match the crime in Sri Lanka? The answer to that is a no-brainer really. We are living in a time when even a minor transgression has to be treated as a national travesty.
The moot point really is if the particular law needs a relook; mind you, this suggestion has nothing to do with India’s involvement or Sehwag being denied a 100. The bottom line is that a particular clause exists in the rule book which can only be called absurd now; as it happens in many cases, you can see the ass in the law only when you are caught in a real situation.
In the current case, it was more than evident that Sri Lanka were desperately trying to deny Sehwag: Sangakkara conceded four byes at the very start of the over which didn’t look too clever. And then, Randiv bowled a huge no-ball to make sure that the one run that Sehwag needed was actually added up to extras.
Sehwag, of course, smashed the ball over long-off for a zero-value six. According to the rules, the match was over as soon as the no-ball was called. The point is, in any other situation, the ball does not become dead the moment it’s called a no-ball: the batsman is still allowed to hit it and take as many runs as he can; indeed, he can even get out in four different ways.
So why should the batsman not be credited with the runs scored by him? It’s almost like saying you can’t get four runs or six for a shot because the team needed only one run to win. It doesn’t make sense. Sure, it’s a flaw which the law-makers didn’t anticipate when they were making it; but now that they have seen it, it only makes sense to correct it.
The Lankan Board, sadly, made Randiv a bigger villain by taking the high moral ground: the young fellow was probably just following instructions; he was within his right to do so. If anything, he had only inflicted another wound to the spirit of the game.
So, please, let us bury this episode (if not the clause) and move on; let’s not kill gamesmanship in the bargain without which sport would not be sport.
